Bathtub Gin Navy Strength Bottling Note

This is the Navy-Strength edition of the famous Bathtub Gin from Professor Cornelius Ampleforth. As well as boasting a higher ABV than the original Bathtub Gin, this edition also has a bigger botanical punch thanks to the 'bashing up' (technical term) of the botanicals to release more flavour.

The story goes that the term Navy-Strength was the result of the British Navy demanding gin to be bottled at 57%abv so that if it was accidentally splashed on gunpowder, the powder would still ignite. It was more likely that it was a weight-saving measure but that's not as fun now is it?

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: The additional abv is immediately apparent, but well-tempered by a huge whack of citrus. After the initial hit of juniper and citrus, the spices are easily accessible – far more so than in the standard Bathtub. Top-notes of Cinnamon and Cardamom are supported by the earthier Coriander and Clove. Overall, this is one of the best noses on any gin I’ve yet to experience.

Palate: Huge, mouth-filling, oily and complex. The initial burst of flavour comes courtesy of the spices – Cardamom, Cinnamon, then follows the Citrus and Juniper backbone, before settling into a wonderful melange of that Coriander and Clove combination. Absolutely fantastic.

Finish: Incredibly long and lingering, with the cinnamon and clove jostling for position for literally minutes after the initial sip.

Overall: We talk about ‘sipping gins’ all the time, but I’m not convinced anyone is actually buying it. This, my friends, is the exception. An absolutely ridiculously flavour-packed spirit, far beyond the reaches of what would be possible using distillation alone as a method of manufacture. Just remarkable…

A taste of Raffles Hotel Singapore.

Had to hide this from the "rellies" over Christmas (didn't want to spoil them to much) I am now on my second sampling this pm. A large Copita glass full of ice, Fentimans Tonic, a peeling of lemon and a decent measure of this delectable gin makes an old man happy. Just need a Memsahib to share one with! Bliss. 10 out of 10!

Despite the jokey name, which put me off initially - I thought it wasn't a serious contender! - this really is one of the best gins ever. The cold compounded botanicals are judged to perfection - and the strength of flavour balances the alcoholic strength. It is superb.

    Dark and Earthy

Regarding the issue of opening the gin, I left the twine on, and used a sharp knife to score around where I thought the join was with the cork, I then peeled off the wax and pulled out the cork.
The initial aroma is very strong and complex. Quite dark, earthy and woody aromas. The gin is the colour of a pale whiskey. Tasted neat, you can definitely taste the 57%. With tonic the gin sustains the darker flavours, with some sweet notes as well. From reading the description above, I wonder if it is the clove which has such a strong flavour, although it is difficult to identify single flavours and the combination works so well.
Compared to my previous favourites Caorunn and The Botanist, this is a much more complex "darker" gin, its delicious.

    Simply perfect

This is the best gin ever made, the kind that shows up its mass-produced competitors as chemical smelling/ tasting by comparison. The citrus smell and full flavour of this edition is just outstanding, it is simply perfect.

    Five Stars

having been a fan of the Bathtub I had to try the Navy-Strength. Made a Pegu Club the classic way. Imbibed. Straight to heaven. Kill me now. I have of Ambrosia supped.
