    Monkey 47 Dry Gin

An unusual gin from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 contains a unique ingredient. No, not that! Lingonberries! The 47 comes from the number of botanicals that go into this unique gin, and the fact it's bottled at a healthy 47%. It seems that the botanicals speak for themselves, as the gin has received bucketfuls of critical acclaim. Some say less is more, not for Monkey 47!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Oh there is a lot going on here... woody, vegetable smells under pin fresh grassy citrus notes and botanical sweetness, like a pine forest after the rain.

    Palate

Predictably complex, this is a robust and powerful gin with plenty of spice, fruit and herb flavours. It's very well structured, and difficult to unpick but a citrus fresh start segues into pine and wood notes for a drying finish.

    Finish

    Wooded and reassuringly heavy.

    Overall

A unique gin, that is crying out to be made into a Martini. It'll need an equally robust vermouth though.

    Wow

Not going to get bored with this, it’s different to most other Gins but something new to discover with every sip. Bad news is it’s only 500ml so not going to last long

    Yummy

This isn't gin, but it's absolutely delicious. Interesting with ice....and packs a punch. Wonderful with tonic. It's hard to see how this could not be labelled as gin, but it really isn't. So don't think about it as such. Just enjoy it.

Its own thing. I like it

Tasted with ice and a slim slice of lime. First of all, this is very un-gin-like. There is just the barest hint of juniper, but lots of flowers and herbs. It is definitely different. It has character. It can be drunk neat without drama, which is unusual for gin. Especially gin this strong. Will update once I track down some Bickford's tonic. :-)

It's like they tried too hard, and came up short

I had high hopes for Monkey 47, based on some of the reviews I'd read. But I was rather disappointed, as it didn't live up to the hype. The flavour was... interesting. The closest thing I could come up with is a combination of Bombay Sapphire and Ransom Old Tom gins, but not as good as either. I think that the creators became obsessed with reaching that "magical" 47th ingredient early on in the creation, but ended up throwing in all sorts of botanicals to reach that number; unfortunately, more isn't always better, and some of the botanicals clearly didn't complement the whole product. There were SO many flavours bouncing around the tongue that it was more of a mess than refined and complex. I'm not saying that it was bad, just not very good. And when it's priced as high as what I paid for a bottle, it ought to be fantastic.

    Fabulous...

Beautiful Gin, probably my new favourite. It's such a flavourful drink, just a shame the bottle isn't bigger! ?
