An unusual gin from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 contains a unique ingredient. No, not that! Lingonberries! The 47 comes from the number of botanicals that go into this unique gin, and the fact it's bottled at a healthy 47%. It seems that the botanicals speak for themselves, as the gin has received bucketfuls of critical acclaim. Some say less is more, not for Monkey 47!
Oh there is a lot going on here... woody, vegetable smells under pin fresh grassy citrus notes and botanical sweetness, like a pine forest after the rain.
Predictably complex, this is a robust and powerful gin with plenty of spice, fruit and herb flavours. It's very well structured, and difficult to unpick but a citrus fresh start segues into pine and wood notes for a drying finish.
Wooded and reassuringly heavy.
A unique gin, that is crying out to be made into a Martini. It'll need an equally robust vermouth though.
Lady's First Hotel lobby on the rocks, lemon, soda
No other gin comes close. Flavours are out of this world.. Highly recommended.
I tried this for the first time this summer at a restaurant in Lisbon that boasted 18 pages (small print) of different types of gin. I don’t often veer from my usual order as I am always disappointed. But the options were dizzying and I asked the bartender for his recommendation. He asked me what flavours I like. I said citrus. He said the choice was obvious in that case. He served it was a peel of orange and a vanilla bean - the only way he would serve it. Refuses to serve it with lemon or lime. I was skeptical. It was, in a word, perfect.
Just tucking into first Monkey. Fantastic. Will go again I think. ?
I've drank many, many gins and Monkey 47 is the second best gin in the world. (the best gin in the world is "Gutsy Monkey"). Worthy of 5 stars and worth every penny.
