Master of Malt
1 Sept 2017
1 May 2022

Gin is grand, and so are casks, so it's always exciting when the two meet! This cask-aged gin was distilled in 2017, with a whole host of classic botanicals including the likes of coriander, angelica, orange, lemon, cinnamon, and liquorice. Next up, the gin was filled into a single ex-bourbon cask, where it remained for the following four years, under the watchful eyes of the gang right here at Master of Malt. In 2022, the time had come for the cask to be opened, and to release a total of 255 bottles for our Single Cask series.
Intense pine and juniper hit the nose while it's still being poured into the glass, with oily, almost malty spice. A touch of buttered popcorn joins, before huge helpings of fresh lemon peels, garden herbs, and lemon drizzle cake.
So soft, with creamy lemon posset and zesty sorbet. Bright notes of rosemary shine alongside dense juniper, coating the mouth with delicately woody, fragrant spice. A touch of earthen rootiness develops in the depths.
Orange peel and floral vanilla arrive towards the end with aromatic spices and distant incense. The gentlest prickle of peppery oak joins right at the finish, with resinous pine lingering.

I'm not very good at picking out individual flavours of the botanicals but I can tell you the flavour of this cask aged gin is wonderful in the mouth and leaves a very pleasant, moreish aftertaste. This is the first cask aged gin I have tasted but it won't be the last. Only 255 bottles released ?, I had better order another before anyone reads this review, its Dec 1st now and I doubt this bottle will see Christmas!
