Rock Rose Gin is made at the Dunnet Bay Distillery all the way up in Caithness, Scotland. This very northerly gin features an alluring botanical selection including locally harvested Rhodiola Rosea, Rowan Berries, Sea Buckthorn, Blaeberries, Verbena, Coriander Seed, Cardamom and Juniper from two different countries - Italy and Bulgaria. They use a traditional copper pot still, which of course has a name (it's Elizabeth).
Bright berries, followed by waves of soft florals (heather and rose), savoury maritime hints and lively juniper. Subtly creamy on the finish with vanilla.
Amazing gin and a fantastic range. One of the original new wave gins and still outstanding against the new competition. Love the refill concept and have been refilling for nearly 1 year now.
The gin was lovely but I find the bottle design a bit bonkers. They claim it's 'sustainable' but ceramic is really hard to recycle in conventional recycling bins and then they encourage you to keep the bottle and refill with their recyclable pouches - interesting customer retention scheme but what if you just want to drink the bottle and not buy again? Then what? Seems a bit greenwashy if you ask me...
Met Martin, Claire and Mr McIntosh up at Dunne Bay back in the early days in 2014. I seriously rate their Original, and the seasonal distillations are exceptional. Wonderful Scottish Gin. Possibly none better.
Worth buying
I first tried this in Glasgow back in 2015 as it was recommended by the barman. Loved it then and every bottle since.
