Black Robin
From the same folks behind Blue Duck Vodka over in New Zealand comes Black Robin Gin! Just like the vodka, the spirit is distilled from whey, and the botanicals are sourced organically wherever possible. Among the botanicals is the New Zealand Horopito, and ancient flowering plant more commonly known as peppertree, seeing as the leaves give a chilli-like heat and flavour. Sustainability is key to the brand inspired by the endangered black robin, with sales from each bottle donated towards preserving the species.
Lemongrass, lime peel and leafy watercress. Anise and caraway develop in the glass.
Leafy notes continue on the palate, joined by spiciness of cardamom and juniper.
Sweet hints of liquorice and pear skin linger.
Utterly fantabulous, a real treat and the only gin delicate yet robust enough to fully satisfy. Top marks Black Robin ... truly excellent.
I was lucky enough to be given a bottle of Black Robin Rare Gin and have found a new favourite, very smooth and delicate flavours. I will certainly be stocking up and passing on the favour.
