Bottles of Macallan in the Macallan distillery

The Macallan Whisky distillery

The six pillars

The Macallan Distillery, one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland, has remained fundamentally unchanged for nearly 200 years. In 1824, it was established in Speyside, an area located in North-East Scotland that is often acknowledged as the heart of Scotch whisky distillation.

The Macallan’s reputation for quality single malts is the result of the devotion, commitment, and skill of The Masters of Spirit and Wood, the people at the heart of The Macallan. Underpinning this mastery of spirit and wood are The Macallan’s Six Pillars: the unique elements that combine to make The Macallan so special.

The Macallan home grounds

Spiritual Home

Built in 1700, Easter Elchies House is the quintessential Jacobean manor house, and it sits at the heart of the 485-acre Macallan estate; its rich and iconic history cement its status as The Macallan’s Spiritual Home, depicted on every bottle.

The Macallans Curiously Small whisky stills

Curiously Small Stills

The Macallan’s “Curiously Small” copper pot stills are some of the smallest in Scotland (hence the name). Their unique size and shape help to concentrate the new make spirit, contributing a rich mouth-feel and provide fruity, full-bodied flavours characteristic of The Macallan.

Inside The Macallan Whisky Distillery

Finest Cut

As little as 16% of the spirit, one of the smallest percentages in the industry, is collected from the spirit stills and filled into the casks to mature. This is the Finest Cut, and represents the optimum character of new make spirit that best suits The Macallan’s renowned sherry-seasoned casks.

Exceptional Oak casks

Exceptional Oak Casks

The quality of The Macallan’s Exceptional Oak Casks is the single greatest contributor to the outstanding character of its whisky, contributing 100% of the colour and up to 80% of the flavour. As a result, The Macallan invests more than any other distillery in sourcing, crafting, seasoning, and caring for its casks.

Peerless Spirit, Macallan bottle

Peerless Spirit

The Master Whisky Maker and their team nose thousands of samples every year to create the different Macallan expressions recognised around the world. This exacting task and constant attention to quality, together with the ‘marrying’ process, is the last step in creating one of the world’s truly great whiskies.

Naturally coloured whisky bottles

Natural Colour

All colour in The Macallan whiskies is 100% natural; whisky in its purest form. It is only the interaction of the new make spirit with the oak of the maturation casks that delivers the rich and natural diversity of colour.
