Roku is the first globally commercially available craft gin* brand from the legendary Japanese spirit producer Suntory. The Yamazaki distiller has actually been in the gin business for more than eighty years, and entered the category with the launch of Hermes Dry Gin in 1936. This product may have been eventually discontinued in 1980, but Suntory has had gin on the market continuously, in one form or another, ever since.

Roku, which was launched in July 2017, is different as all other pre-existing Suntory gins were never sold outside of Japan. The name comes from the Japanese for ‘six’ and refers to the six local, seasonal botanicals that complement eight traditional gin botanicals which are used to create the brand’s core expression. The gin is presented in a hexagonal bottle (six!) with a label printed from Japanese washi paper.

*Suntory explain that they call Roku ‘craft’ gin because it is made in small batches using traditional process based on Japanese culture, not because they are a small manufacturer.
