Cockburns Port

Cockburn's Port, one of the most venerable names in the port wine industry, is steeped in over two centuries of winemaking tradition. Founded in 1815 by Scotsmen Robert Cockburn and his brother John, the house has built an illustrious reputation, crafting some of the finest ports that have graced many a table across continents. Its journey through time tells a tale not just of exceptional winemaking, but also of passion, resilience, and evolution.

Located in the heart of the Douro Valley in Portugal, the epicentre of port wine production, Cockburn's benefits from a terroir that is nothing short of extraordinary. The rugged landscape, with its steep terraced vineyards beside the Douro River, and the region's microclimate, play an integral role in shaping the unique character of Cockburn's ports. The schist soils, which retain heat and drain well, are particularly conducive to cultivating the grapes that go into these celebrated wines.

The brand's commitment to authenticity is evident in their approach to grape cultivation. While many producers have shifted to mechanized vineyards, Cockburn's still harvests a significant portion of its grapes by hand from its Quinta dos Canais and Quinta do Vale Coelho vineyards. This traditional approach ensures that only the best fruit is used, a crucial factor when crafting vintage ports, for which the house is particularly renowned.

Cockburn's Vintage Ports are a testament to the brand's expertise and dedication. These are not produced every year but only when the conditions are perfect. They mature in oak barrels, developing a depth and complexity of flavour that can be truly astounding.

Another notable offering from Cockburn's is its Special Reserve. Launched in 1969, it was a revolutionary product at the time, intended to offer a high-quality port that didn't need the extended ageing of a vintage port. With its rich, full-bodied profile, brimming with notes of spice, dried fruit, and chocolate, it became an instant classic and remains a favourite to this day.

In 2006, Cockburn's witnessed a significant transition when it was acquired by the Symington Family, another stalwart in the port industry. With this change in stewardship, there has been a renewed emphasis on quality and tradition, ensuring that Cockburn's remains true to its legacy.

The allure of Cockburn's lies not just in its exceptional ports but also in its enduring commitment to tradition, even as it adapts to the evolving tastes of new generations.
