From sunny Spain, the Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva is aged using the Solera system, which they say produces a brandy with an average age of 15 years. We like to think there might have been a time where someone misheard their manager and aged the brandy next to a stack of Solero ice-creams, but, we fear this is probably unlikely.
Sampled this at a party. I am glad I didn't spend the money but to be fair: this is a very high quality spirit. We also had a Pierre Ferrand Ambre cognac and a japanese whisky at the table and Mendoza was the most popular, by far. It's just not my favorite style. It tastes quite like an Amontillado or Oloroso sherry - lots of oxidized "dried fruit" notes and that sherry funk. For me, a scotch drinker, even some cognacs are too sweet but I do enjoy a crisp cognac. And that, to me, is the difference - cognacs have a certain crisp definition, while spanish solera brandies have a dark, murky, earthy oxidized profile. Variety is great - just like some people prefer bourbon or scotch, while others enjoy all styles of whisky, so it is with brandies. I'm glad I tried it but I doubt I'll be purchasing full bottles of Spanish brandy for myself. But will certainly keep tasting when offered. And they do offer great value.
Simplemente Excelente.
Danny of Las Vistas Restaurante in Lanzarote introduced me to this fabulous brandy - the reviews below barely do it justice.
