Master of Malt’s most read stories of 2018

As 2018 draws to a close, we reflect on the news and features that caught your eye the most this year.

Well, we’ve reached the end of another year. The Earth has put in another hell of a shift in its orbit around the Sun. Now is the time where we reflect on all that happened in 2018.

It has been another 12 months filled with standout stories, all manner of incidents, and of course highs and lows. Among the articles you read most on our award-winning blog were round-ups of great booze, limited-edition whisky launches, and a sorry tale of a collapsing warehouse. We shed a tear for all that bourbon.

Without further delay, these are the top 10 stories that you read, shared and talked about the most in 2018.

The Nightcap: 31 August

Happy Friday, folks! Here’s The Nightcap to help you roll on into the weekend armed with a plethora of booze news. Always handy if you’re looking to impress down the pub/on a hot date/out in a bar*…

Welcome to the weekend, team! Step away from the workload and pick up a dram. You deserve it. Friday evening is here! (Apologies as always if you’re a non-nine-to-fiver and are indeed working at the weekend… join the vibe when you can.)

It’s been a short week here at MoM Towers thanks to the summer bank holiday Monday. But that hasn’t stopped us bringing you all manner of news over on the blog this week.

On Tuesday we unveiled our latest competition of much excitement – win a VIP trip to Speyside and discover The BenRiach Distillery! Then on Wednesday we got hold of Pernod Ricard’s annual report and crunched the numbers to see how the likes of Jameson, The Glenlivet and Chivas Regal performed over the last year.

Yesterday we had a blog double whammy: Annie talked us through all things aquavit in her beginner’s guide, before we shed a little bit more light onto Diageo’s Special Releases 2018 line-up. Not long until the full reveal: check back on 12 September for details of all 10 bottlings in full.

It’s been a week since the last Nightcap update, which can only mean one thing… Well, honestly, it could mean a lot of things. However, only one of those things is important for this compulsory blog preamble – it’s time for another edition of The Nightcap.

Whisky Advent Day 4: Elijah Craig Small Batch 12 Year Old

Whisky Advent Calendar

After Scotch and Japanese single malts and a blended whisky, the Drinks by the Dram Whisky Advent Calendar is now taking us to Old Bourbon County for some classic American whiskey! Well, actually, without moving, Elijah Craig was from Fayette, Woodford or Scott Counties, Virginia or Kentucky (keeping up with this season’s map in the late 18th century was an expensive business), but that’s because Bourbon County was named after the French house rather than the whiskey. It’s with ol’ Elijah that the story of Kentucky bourbon whiskey may begin, however…

Master of Cocktails – Spiced Pear Whiskey Sour

Master of Cocktails Spiced Pear Whiskey Sour

Right then ladies and gents. Trust everyone’s recovered sufficiently after NYE? Time for this week’s #MasterofCocktails. This week we’re making a super-delicious Whiskey-Sour Variant recipe, which I have simply dubbed the Spiced Pear Whiskey Sour. We’ll be using the St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur for this one. It really is god’s own stuff, made using Pear Brandy, Pear Juice, and spices. Top, top marks St George Spirits.

I’m pairing (pearing? Sorry. Sorry) it with Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon for its perfume. I think this works well with the spice.

The Importance of Cats in the Workplace (Specifically in Distilleries)

Whiskeh Kitteh Whisky Cat

Earlier this week, Amy Hopkins over at the Spirits Business posted a fantastic article that really spoke to us here at Master of Malt, all about the most famous mousers at distilleries around the world. If you had any doubts about cats being the best animal ever, then these brave feline warriors ought to cement their place at the top of the “Best Animal Podium”. (If you were wondering, pugs are a close second, followed by bumblebees.)

But why does a distillery need a cat? You can understand other job roles like Master Blender, Maltster and Warehouse Manager being vital for the day to day tasks, but a cat?

The Whip at The Running Horse Pub
50 Davies Street, London, W1K 5JE
Tel: 020 7493 1275
Nearest Tube: Bond Street
Monday to Saturday, 12-11pm

Hunter S Thompson’s famous Kentucky Derby inkings were in my mind last Saturday as I climbed the stairs to The Whip in Mayfair – a newly opened bar which carries on the equestrian theme of partner operation, The Running Horse (located downstairs). Brandishing some serious bourbons, the menu is a mouthwatering selection of Derby classics – Mint Juleps were in order, and The Whip’s elegantly styled confines were a suitable location.
