Tag: St Patrick’s Day

Every year, people around the world celebrate St Patrick’s Day on 17 March. If you’re in Ireland, there’s a national holiday. Elsewhere, it tends to be an excuse to enjoy an Irish tipple. And with so many to choose from, it makes sense! From Irish whiskey and the growing cohort of gins through to the historic poitín category, Irish cream liqueurs and more, there’s a delicious spectrum of spirits that hail from the Emerald Isle.

And the Teeling Irish Whiskey one-of-a-kind decanter winner is…

Poitín

We love Irish whiskey all year round, but in the run-up to St. Patrick’s Day we rarely reach for anything else. So we were thrilled to team up with Teeling Whiskey Company to offer one lucky winner a super-duper, one-of-a-kind 1991 single cask decanter to mark the 2018 occasion!

Up for grabs was a specially-created-just-for-you decanter of Teeling Irish Whiskey, hand-drawn by Teeling master distiller Alex Chasko from a 1991 cask he’d personally selected. Not only would the decanter bear Chasko’s signature, but the label would also carry the winner’s name. Exciting indeed!

Funnily enough, we had LOADS of interest in this competition. One-of-a-kind personalised decanters don’t grow on trees, after all. And it’s even more exciting when you know the whiskey inside will be incredible!

Q&A: Teeling Whisky Company’s Alex Chasko!

With St Patrick’s Day coming up on 17 March, it seems as good a time as any to catch up with Teeling Whiskey Company’s master distiller, Alex Chasko. We get the latest from the Irish whiskey distillery, and talk progressiveness in production, on-site developments, and what the influx of new distilleries means for the sector.

Are we entering the golden age of Irish whiskey? It certainly seems so. Historically there have been just four distilleries on the island of Ireland: Midleton, Bushmills, Kilbeggan and Cooley. Now there are 18 up and running, with another 16 at the planning permission stage. Growth is poised to be tremendous – and with so many new players coming on to the scene, the character of the category could shift significantly.

One of the newer players – yet with historic roots which can be traced back to 1782 – is the Dublin-based Teeling Distillery. Officially opened in 2015 by brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling, the distillery identifies as “progressive”, with a whopping 25% of its output dedicated to whiskey experiments. Its expressions are pretty tasty, too.

Teeling’s distiller is Alex Chasko, an Oregon-born Heriot-Watt Brewing & Distilling graduate who joined the company from Cooley in 2012. Who better to talk us through the Teeling operations, and give his view on the rapidly transforming Irish whiskey sector of today? Grab a dram (Irish, of course), pull up a pew and let’s get stuck in…

Don’t forget, until St Patrick’s Day you can get £5 off a bottle of Teeling Single Malt, AND win a totally one-of-a-kind fancy-pants single cask expression selected and bottled by Alex himself!

The cream of the crop – Irish cream liqueurs are good

We’ve offered our blog readers two delicious alternatives to Irish whiskey for this St. Patrick’s Day – poitín and gin. However, there remains another path you could follow. The Path of Irish Cream Liqueurs.

If you’ve been keeping up with the blog posts this week, you’ll have seen two features each offering up a switcheroo on the traditional tipple of Irish whiskey for St. Patrick’s Day (which is occurring this Saturday, 17 March). Our Adam gave us an in-depth history lesson on poitín, while our Annie took us on a whistle-stop tour of Irish gin distilleries. This is all well and good, but you might be thinking there’s another tipple well worth exploring. I am, of course, referring to the extreme excellence of Irish cream liqueurs.

A gin lover’s guide to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day

Irish gin

Irish gin is bringing its A-game for 2018 – so this St Patrick’s Day, why not ditch the obligatory green pint in favour of botanical brilliance from one of Ireland’s most dynamic spirits producers? We’ll show you around…

St Patrick’s Day celebrations are on the horizon, which means shamrocks, parades, and plenty of craic. And while our love for Irish whiskey knows no bounds, it seems apt to turn our attention to the Emerald Isle’s juniper obsession.

The number of Irish gin-making distilleries exploded in 2017, and there are now more than 30 diverse, flavourful and often regionally-inspired brands to choose from. What’s more, exports of Irish gin more than trebled last year according to the latest data from the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI), so clearly we’re loving the lot.

Whether they’re hand-foraging botanicals, sourcing unusual base spirits, or making history in the gin category, Ireland’s distillers are certainly a creative bunch. Join us as we traverse north to south and east to west to uncover some of their most compelling gins…

Waterford Distillery produces ‘world’s first’ biodynamic Irish whiskey

biodynamic

Though we’re yet to welcome Waterford Distillery’s first release, the Irish distillery has already garnered a reputation for its terroir-centric approach to whiskey-making. Here, CEO and founder Mark Reynier – the man who resurrected Islay’s Bruichladdich – reveals how he set about creating the first-ever biodynamic Irish whiskey

How and where its raw ingredients are grown has been key to the Waterford philosophy since the distillery was founded back in 2014. The team sources barley from 61 different farms; harvesting, storing, malting, distilling and ageing them separately to capture their provenance.

Now, they’ve taken the notion one step further by distilling 75 tonnes of biodynamic barley – equivalent to around 25,000 litres of new-make or approximately 170 barrels – grown by local farmers John McDonnell from County Meath, and Alan Mooney and Trevor Harris from County Kildare.

Put poitín first this St. Patrick’s Day

Poitín

As the world gears up to celebrate all things Emerald Isle, at MoM Towers we want to present the case for its oldest spirit, poitín! We take a look at the past, present and future of the drink with help from Teeling Whiskey and London’s The Sun Tavern bar, plus we check out some cracking cocktail suggestions and explore top bottlings.

St. Patrick’s Day, observed annually on 17 March, is generally a divisive occasion. For some it is all fun and festivities, celebrating the Irish people and their contribution to the world. For others, it is an infuriating time of year, a day of international patronisation, stereotyping and cultural appropriation that leads to a night out only possibly outdone by New Year’s Eve on the ‘God, why did I bother?’ scale.

But there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have a good time this St. Patrick’s Day, or cherishing the Irish in you (no matter how dubious the connections). So why not leave the leprechaun outfits at home, along with the references to ‘drink’, ‘potatoes’, ‘to be sure to be sure’ and ‘top of the morning’, and celebrate it with a new terrific tipple. A surprising spirit with a rich history, cocktail potential and huge taste. No, not whiskey – poitín!

St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland with Jameson!

Hello Dublin Jameson St Patricks Day Live

It was 11am in Gatwick airport on Saturday 14th March. The plane taking a small drinks press contingent over to Ireland for Jameson’s extended #HelloDublin St. Patrick’s Day celebrations was due to leave in just over an hour from Heathrow. Had I made a terrible mistake?

In fact, I’d just arrived back from a holiday and had always known I couldn’t make that flight, just as I knew all I’d be seeing on my return to blighty was Gatwick airport itself. My flight to Cork was later, and until then I’d simply be pretending I was Tom Hanks in The Terminal. (Although there were no Catherine Zeta-Jones love interest developments to speak of.)
