Free Shipping to Commemorate Black Tot Day 2015

Black Tot Day Master of Malt

The 31st July 1970 was the day on which the Royal Navy issued the final ever daily rum ration, or daily tot. To commemorate the end of this naval tradition, observed for over three centuries, we’re offering Free Shipping* on all orders containing Pusser’s or Rumbullion! rums, or indeed the Black Tot Last Consignment, up until midnight (BST) Friday 31st July.

That includes Pusser’s ‘Gunpowder Proof’ Black Label, the new rebranded name (introduced in 2014) for their classic 54.5% British Navy rum. Previously known as Blue Label, that name is now reserved for a brand new 40% offering, the reason being that 40% abv is the maximum strength you can actually send to military bases these days, including naval bases and mess bars. Got all that? Excellent. Feel free to scoot off now and start filling your basket up with delicious rum as well as anything else you fancy free shipping on in the same order, but if you can contain that instinct for just a few moments longer then herein lies a brief history of the tot…

Master of Cocktails – Mutiny on the Bounty

Master of Cocktails Mutiny On The Bounty

Well greetings cocktail fans. Everyone enjoy their bank-holiday weekend? Ready for some #MasterofCocktails action? This week we’re going to make a super-summery drink, based on this baby – Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old.

If you’re going to be joining in with this one, there’s a quick step you’re going to need to do a day in advance…

We’re going to add a single heaped teaspoon of our raw cacao to the coconut water. It’s important to do this 24 hours before you make your cocktail as water-extraction (which is what we want here) takes a lot longer than alcohol-based extraction.

Master of Cocktails – Guyana’s not French, but the Melon is

Master of Cocktails Guyana's Not French

Greetings #MasterofCocktails fans. Trust everyone had a pleasant Bank Holiday Weekend? Did you have a cocktail to see it on its way? We certainly did…

This week we’re making a suitably tropical number, that I think we’ll call ‘Guyana’s not French, but the Melon is’ (if you were making along with us on Monday, you’ll note that I took my own advice from last week and came up with the name for this cocktail before finishing it).

Master of Cocktails – Spiced Ale Flip

Master of Cocktails Spiced Ale Flip

Right then ladies and gents – time for this week’s #MasterofCocktails. A real winter warmer this week, superb for chilly climes. We are, of course, doing a Spiced Ale Flip recipe.

For this one, you’ll be needing an unusual bit of barware – a fire poker. Keep it next to the strainer and the bar spoons.

Now this is really a very straight-forward recipe, which you can adapt at will. It all comes together very fast, with prep.

Master of Cocktails – Hot Buttered Rum

Master of Cocktails Hot Buttered Rum

This week’s #MasterofCocktails marks the turn of the seasons. It’s clearly autumn now, and with fireworks displays, Halloween etc. coming, clearly we need a hot buttered rum recipe.

Like many ‘oft-neglected’ classics, this drink has a simple problem, with a simple solution. The problem is immiscibility, by which I mean that butter and rum simply don’t like each other and don’t want to play together. One’s Lipophlic, or Hydrophobic, or some other shit that I can never remember. Basically we need an emulsifier. That’s where the lecithin comes in…

Master of Cocktails – The Spiced Black Truffle Palmetto

Master of Cocktails The Spiced Black Truffle Palmetto

This week’s drink (a day later than usual due to the bank holiday) is a twist on a Palmetto recipe, using the amazing Rumbullion! XO rum along with a couple of superb vermouths, and Bitter Bastards Black Truffle Bitters. The Black truffle notes add a superb, almost ethereal balance to the drink that makes it probably my favourite creation of the last few months.

It’s a simple drink to make, which I’m sure will be welcome after last week’s (and next week’s) more prep-heavy drinks.

New Product – Rumbullion! XO 15yo

Professor Cornelius Ampleforth Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old

It’s hard to believe, but the original Rumbullion! hasn’t even been with us for 3 years yet.

Initially launched in November 2011, and followed by a punchier Navy-Strength version late in 2012 (you’ll want to click on that one – it’s got explosives in it), it felt like high time we stepped up and produced a super-premium version.

With this in mind, development and sourcing work for this ultra-aged expression began over 2 years ago – it’s taken us this long to find a reliable source of exceptional, superbly-aged Caribbean rum that fits and compliments the flavour-profile of the original offering.
