Greetings one and all to another edition of #MasterofCocktails. If you didn’t catch last week’s instalment, you might not have seen that we’re changing up how we do this – a much less step-by-step affair, though you’ll be getting more advanced, exciting recipes, with more focus on presentation and garnish. This week we’re going to be using the ‘Beast of Dufftown’, Mortlach single malt Scotch whisky.
Time for us all to open the 21st window of our Whisky Advent Calendars! And inside it’s… a new look single malt Scotch whisky from Dufftown in Speyside. A whole new expression from Mortlach to be precise, a distillery that was founded back in the 1820s and you may know best from their 16yo ‘Flora & Fauna’ release featuring a Goldeneye duck. (James Pond, anyone?)
With past distillery releases few and far between, Mortlach (or ‘duck massacre’) now has its own shiny new core range! Time to jump in with Rare Old, which has a greater bourbon cask influence than you may expect alongside the more familiar Sherried spirit.
NB – this news has been strictly embargoed until 13:00 today, so you’ll very likely be seeing some updates to this post as soon as we receive the official press release (as well as some pretty pictures no doubt). Keep checking back folks.
Breaking news: Diageo are to re-launch the ever-popular Mortlach Single Malt into their stable of Permanent single malts in 2014, Master of Malt have been told.
The first phase of the product rollout will cover the UK, France, USA, Asia Pacific, Taiwan, China, Singapore and Global Duty Free beginning in July 2014. The rest of the world will follow.

Those good ol’ boys at Gordon and Macphail have done it again – they’ve release another ‘the world’s oldest whisky’…
Following on from the huge success of last year’s release of a 70 year old Mortlach under their new ‘Generations’ brand, G&M have released another cask that has been sitting dormant in their warehouse since the days of the second world war.
Perhaps the most astonishing part of both of these releases has been that neither of the whiskies have been described in any way as ‘over the hill’ or ‘too woody’. It’s testament to the absolute vastness of G&M’s stock that they’re able to pull out gems such as these after the best part of a lifetime in Oak.
Distilled on 4th February 1940 (just 3 days before the release of Disney’s Pinocchio – thank you Wikipedia), the whisky was filled into a first-fill sherry butt which has yielded only 100 70cl bottles, and 175 20cl bottles. The bottling ABV (at natural cask strength of 45.9%) is actually comparatively high for a whisky More…

We’re proud to announce that we now stock whiskies from Adelphi. Over the years we’ve had the good fortune to sample quite a few Adelphi bottlings, and we’ve been very impressed, so we were thrilled when the new bottles arrived.
The Adelphi Distillery is actually one of the lost distilleries of Scotland, which operated from 1826 to around 1907. In 1880, the distillery was acquired by Messrs A. Walker and Co and it was Walker’s great-grandson, Jamie Walker, who restored the Adelphi name in 1993, but this time not as a distillery, as an independent bottler. More…
Further to our prophetic post last week about Old Whisky, the release has been announced earlier today of the new Mortlach 70 Year Old – the oldest bottled Single Malt Whisky in the world. At a full 70 years old, this is one in the eye for Dalmore, whose recent super-high-end releases have never quite hit this magical age marker.
Bottled by Gordon and Macphail, an award-winning malt whisky specialist from Elgin – this super-luxury whisky has been produced and bottled in exceptionally small quantity from a Spanish Ex-Bodega Sherry Hogshead which was laid down in 1938. Click here to read more…
The presentation of whiskies of this age and calibre is paramount, and this release certainly does not disappoint. Presented in a crystal and Sterling Silver decanter, all housed in a hand-made box made from Brazilian Rosewood.
Whilst we’ve not (yet) tasted this world first of a dram, we can include below tasting notes from Charles Maclean..
Available now, and an absolute snip at only £9999!
