Modern blended whiskies you’ll want to boast about

Blended whisky gets a seriously bad rap – call time on single malt snobbery, and stock your home bar with these modern blended whiskies (and blended malts) that equal far more than the sum of their parts…

In the age of the single malt, you’ll be hard pushed to find anyone who would freely admit that their favourite sipper is of the blended variety. For all intents and purposes, it’s the equivalent of wearing a Status Quo t-shirt to a Sex Pistols gig.

Burns Night: Traditional vs. Untraditional

Robert Burns

So. Burns Night. That’s next week. Burns Suppers date back to 1801, with the first one being held by friends of the celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns. They’ve continued ever since, with people around the world enjoying haggis, poetry and whisky on the 25th of January. When something happens for over 200 years, sometimes people think about trying to do something a bit untraditional – like the year that Monkey Shoulder hosted a Burns night celebrating Montgomery Burns and Jake wrote a blog post mostly about a completely different TV show character.

Whisky Santa’s Whisky Advent Day 12: Monkey Shoulder

Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

On the Twelfth Night ye shalt discover a fabulous, unpretentious blended malt in your Whisky Advent Calendar. Why it’s Monkey Shoulder, of course: “Better a witty fool than a foolish wit”!

Why is it called Monkey Shoulder, you ask? Well, back in what you refer to as ‘the old days’, maltmen turned the barley by hand – a very labour-intensive job. With the strenuous work and long hours these chaps undertook, they ended up with a bit of a hunch, known as ‘Monkey Shoulder’. I end up with something similar on Boxing Day after carrying around my heavy sa… my heavy bag of presents all night. Luckily I get a year to rest up afterwards!

Made exclusively with scotch malt whiskies from William Grant’s three Speyside distilleries (Glenfiddich, Balvenie & Kininvie), Monkey Shoulder’s matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and married for three-to-six months. It’s a lovely treat served neat, with ice or indeed in cocktails.

The Monkey Comp Winners Have Popped-Up In London!

The Monkey Shoulder Ultimate Bartender Challenge

The Monkey Shoulder Ultimate Bartender Challenge has been quite a journey – over 50 teams signed up back in March and April, but as Connor MacLeod has taught us (with alarming regularity on this here blog):
“There can be only one.”

Having followed the competition on twitter and attended the grand bar-off last month, I can thoroughly recommend hunting down the competition’s worthy winners at their London Cocktail Week pop-up in 7 Dials this week (as I did yesterday). To explain a little more about this cocktail competition that was totally unlike anything we’ve ever reported on before though, let me hand you over to Monkey Shoulder’s new brand ambassador…

Kininvie Single Malts. They’re Coming.

Kininvie Single Malt Whisky

Back in October we heard that there was to be an exciting, new, secret product from William Grant & Sons and our thoughts immediately turned to a long-anticipated Kininvie single malt release. On that occasion we quickly realised that the imminent launch was in fact for Girvan single grain, but not this time folks. This time it’s the real malty deal!

Kininvie has been William Grant’s slightly mysterious, almost secret distillery for 24 years now, and I’m sure Brian Kinsman has lost count of the times people have asked him whether they’ll ever release an official Kininvie single malt. Well last year they did just that – with an exclusive release in one country – and now it’s the rest of the world’s turn…

If you’ve ever visited Balvenie, then you may well have seen Kininvie distillery, it’s that corrugated iron shed in its more famous brother’s back garden.
