Whisky Advent 2017 Day #17: Talisker 10 Year Old

As #WhiskyAdvent enters its final week, Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar ramps up the spoils with a tasty Scotch that’s high-in-the-sky(e)… (That was rubbish, come back to me)…

The final week of #WhiskyAdvent has begun, and I think it’s an appropriate time to remember why Christmas is so important, so cherished and so utterly wonderful.

I think we all know what I’m talking about here: drams. We all knew that was exactly where I was going with that.

With such a blessing, we can now crack on with #WhiskyAdvent and see what’s behind window #17… A dram of Talisker 10 Year Old!

After half a century maturing in one of the world’s oldest Scotch whisky warehouses, Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old has been liberated from its ex-bourbon hogshead and decanted into bottles – just 74 bottles, to be precise.

Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, and it’s got the stocks to show it. This particular cask, set down in the same year that Bowmore whisky was first officially bottled, clocked up a rather impressive 50-year stint in the distillery’s No. 1 Vaults.

Thanks to one very, very generous customer, we’ve got our hands on a bottle of Bowmore’s 11 year old Fèis Ìle 2017 release, which we’re auctioning to raise lots of marvellous moolah for our chosen charity, Malaria No More UK!

It’s time for another charity auction, folks! But this time round it’s going down a little bit differently. A wonderfully generous Master of Malt customer by the name of Lala donated a *signed* Bowmore Fèis Ìle 2017 bottle for us to auction and raise funds for Malaria No More UK – and we were more than happy to oblige!

Bowmore Mizunara Cask Finish is back in the building!

We’ve received an allocation of three bottles of Bowmore Mizunara Cask Finish direct from the supplier, and we’re going to split the bounty between a two-bottle lottery and 30ml drams!

The exciting news that three bottles of the single malt Scotch whisky are currently in stock does come with certain realities. While all of us here at MoM Towers are thrilled the bottles are back, it does mean that, with thousands of interested customers, there will be some disappointed people whatever we do.

Acknowledging the price and availability of the product, we decided that splitting the stock up between a lottery (see timeline below) and drams was the fairest way to proceed. While there’s no age-statement, the whiskies that were blended for this release were distilled in the 1990s (so they are between 15 and 25 years old) and Mizunara is a highly unusual cask finish. Individual bottles are being sold for a considerable price (£1,195.00, RRP). Given this is the case, there will be no auction.

We’re auctioning the final and oldest releases in two legendary ranges: Bowmore Black 50 Year Old 1964 – The Last Cask and The Macallan in Lalique 65 Year Old – Peerless Spirit with everything over RRP donated to our nominated charity Malaria No More UK.

Following the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection auctions (which raised well over £4k for an excellent cause) and another update to our auction system, it’s time for our first charity auctions of 2017! And, well, just look at the extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime bottles we have available.

Gosh, it certainly takes a lot of effort to run over 5,000 miles. The Proclaimers only walked over 1,000 (or at least they said they would), I wonder it took them about a fifth of the time it took me! Yes, it’s been a couple of weeks, but my Around the World in 80 Drams journey has resumed as I arrive in South Africa after rather long trip from Madrid, Spain. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the first single grain whisky from South Africa – Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, which is produced at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, situated at the foot of the Bainskloof Pass.

Feis Ile Islay That Boutique-y Whisky Company

As some of you may already know, we’re sadly not going to be at Fèis Ìle this year. I know, I know. We had a good run though – attending the last four years in a row as Master of Malt, keeping you all (hopefully) entertained whether you’d made it along or not, running some great promotions and even kitting many of you out with some top notch drams, t-shirts and snazzy tote bags. And it was our absolute pleasure to do so.

There’ll be no Malt Mobile to look out for this year though (much to the delight of Bowmore’s bollards), no gratuitous shots of limited edition whiskies next to hot tubs or Port Ellen tastings and no week long series of our ramblings from the event. But if you are indeed going, especially if it’s your first time, allow us to present our little guide to this year’s festival…

Coastal Whisky Bowmore

Some whiskies can be said to have a ‘coastal’ or ‘maritime’ character, and invariably these are also whiskies that I absolutely love. In fact, these seaside malts are the reason I became interested in whisky in the first place, and the very best examples are still probably my favourite spirits in the world. This is personal taste, of course, and whilst I love most of the gods’ rich tapestry of whisky flavour profiles, I just happen to be a sucker for the Neptunian ones. So, consider me your Neil Oliver as we embark on a journey of discovery and also consider exactly how is it that some malts seemingly take on the very taste of the coast. This, is whisky on the edge… *Cue music*
