Diageo Whisky Theatre

Back in December I visited the Worship Street Whistling Shop for a very special, two hour long ‘multi-sensory experience’: the final Diageo Whisky Theatre of the year. The project is the work of irrepressible Diageo brand ambassador Colin Dunn and the Fluid Movement duo of Tristan Stephenson and Tom Aske who have presented similar experiences in the past, for example with rum, but the mention of whisky certainly caught our attention immediately! I believe Tristan also has a whisky book coming out this year too – one to watch out for.

There is (just) room for nine people but I was joined by a fab four of Gin Monkey, Imbibe’s Laura Foster (recent winner of the Alan Lodge Young International Spirits Writer of the Year), Siobhan Payne from Difford’s Guide and London Cocktail Week and Alex Kratena off of The Artesian (named The World’s Best Bar for the second year running in 2013).

Dear Santa

With plans to make Christmas 2013 closely resemble a night out with Charles Bukowski during his downtime, I’ve been thinking hard about what booze I want. Historically, I would have written to Santa Claus, but I recently read a thought-provoking essay by biologist Dickie Dawkins and now no longer believe in his existence. This, then, is an open letter to anyone who knows me and wants to get me the boozes.

There are people who are born winners. Other people become winners. Some people are born as dolphins, which means that they aren’t actually people at all. We’re not concerned about dolphins today (although we should all help save them from extinction!).

No, today it’s all about the lucky winner of our rather marvellous Gleneagles competition!

Told you we’d be back soon (and we’re not done yet)…

Another week, and another 4 brand-spanking-new releases from That Boutique-y Whisky Company have hit the shelves in time for Christmas. Once again I’m left trying to justify the madness that’s escaped from my bonce and onto the labels of these fine drams…

So – let’s start with the most obvious of the 4. A Giant with a fondness for Jam Sandwiches stealing a giant hat from a dunnage warehouse whilst all unnecessary on Bourbon. That? That.

Hotels are pretty magical. There aren’t many other places where you can pick up the phone, ask for a plate of salmon hors d’oeuvres and someone actually delivers it to your door, or walk downstairs to find world-class restaurants and golf courses. Luxuries like this are often reserved for the lucky folk who live near a park and above a chip shop that does delivery, but hotels make royalty of us all.

This is why we’re very excited to be offering one lucky winner a weekend for two at the Gleneagles Hotel, which lies at the foot of Scottish Highlands, surrounded by lusciously green rolling hills.

So – with the distillery tour over and done with, it was time to move onto the main event; that which we had all been invited along to see. The deconstruction of Ballantine’s 12 Year Old.

Before we get into all that though, I’d like everyone to take a second to behold the image below:

Ballantines selection

Okay. I’ll start here with an apology. This is possibly the most overdue blog post in the history of man (except my review of Dead Rabbit NYC, that’s more overdue). Things have happened since then, y’see. Things involving setting up new and exciting drinks distribution companies, developing a whole mess of new products, and the introduction of a mini sleep-terrorist into my house. These things have precluded me from doing what I should have done ages ago. The last one has also probably precluded me from spelling any words in this post correctly or being sure if my hands are, in fact, my hands. If you’re reading this, Ballantine’s-press-folk, you can have one free shot next time I see you, subject to the normal rules of course*.

Picking up silverware (or even ‘gold-ware’) is always nice, just ask that marvellous gent Andy Murray. It gives one a nice, warm feeling inside, either that or somebody just put some 100,000 Scovilles Naga Chilli Vodka in my tea…

The results from this year’s International Spirits Challenge (ISC) and Scotch Whisky Masters were recently revealed and we’re proud to say that our whiskies did rather well!

First let’s take a look at the International Spirits Challenge 2013, “the most authoritative, respected and influential spirits competition in the world”. Fancy. Earlier this month they released the results of their Whisky Tasting Awards. These come from a rigorous process of blind tasting by panels of over 50 industry experts tasked with “rewarding quality and celebrating excellence”.

Ever fancied attending a glamorous party aboard a luxurious 1920s-style yacht? How about a star-studded shindig on an opulent 157 foot vessel with live entertainment thrown in? (I’ll give you a clue: the answer is “Yes”. Possibly “Hell yes”.)

Well… HERE’S YOUR CHANCE!!!

That’s right, we’ve come up with the goods again and one lucky person will be winning a pair of tickets to attend the The Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Celebration in London on 17th July 2013 aboard the John Walker & Sons Voyager. That’s Ka-Blamo!

The second World Whisky Day, organised by Aberdeen University student Blair Bowman, is just around the corner. A new date of Saturday 18th May has been chosen for this year’s celebrations, a date that Blair hopes one day could even become a national holiday in Scotland.
