How did The Glenlivet, Chivas Regal and Jameson perform in 2018?

With Pernod Ricard’s full-year sales results hot off the press, we take a peek at how the likes of Scotch whiskies The Glenlivet and Chivas Regal, Ireland’s Jameson, Cognac brand Martell and Absolut vodka fared in 2017/18. Spoiler alert: Scotch wasn’t the star of the show…

It’s results season, folks! Big companies left, right and centre are publishing their annual (or quarterly) reports, giving us an insight into how they’re getting on sales-wise. Today it’s the turn of Pernod Ricard to disclose its full-year data to the end of June. We had a nose through the docs and crunched the numbers to see how some of the world’s biggest drinks brands got on…

The Master of Malt World Cup of Scotch

Shin-pads, sticker books and half-time oranges at the ready, folks. It’s time for the The Master of Malt World Cup of Scotch!

You might have noticed that there’s some sort of sporting jamboree going on in Russia at the moment. Sadly Scotland didn’t qualify but the spirit of Scotland – literally – is in the hearts of almost all football playing countries. What’s interesting is how different brands, some of which aren’t even available in Scotland, dominate different markets. So in honour of the country that might not be the best at football but is pretty damn good at whisky, here is the Master of Malt World Cup of Scotch, each country represented by its favourite Scotch.

Ballantine’s Single Malt? The blended Scotch giant branches out

Ballantine’s Single Malt is officially a thing – the Chivas Brothers-owned blended Scotch (the second-largest in the the world by volume) is launching three 15 year old single malts under its own brand: Glenburgie, Miltonduff and Glentauchers.

Ballantine’s shifts more than 70 million bottles a year worldwide, second only to Diageo’s Johnnie Walker in the global Scotch whisky volume stakes. It’s big news that the brand is to release three Ballantine’s-branded Speyside single malts into the world – each with a fairly hefty age-statement at that.

Whisky in Space (2015: A Space Oddity)

2001 A Space Odyssey

Space. The final front ear. Home of paranoid robots named HAL, space stations that ain’t no moons, cats and David Bowie. Recently whisky has also been crowbarred into this list with alarming regularity. So much so, that I thought it was time to take another look at it all.

You see, having inexplicably found myself in Disneyland Paris for a few days back in August, during which time I naturally took up residence on Space Mountain, I now quite reasonably consider myself to be the office expert when it comes to all things space.

The Day of the Dalmunach

Dalmunach Distillery

If you’ve long been wondering about what Chivas Brothers will be doing with the site of the Imperial distillery, which was mothballed in 1998, you can wonder no longer. Today, the 22nd of June 2015, the Dalmunach distillery will be officially opened by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

Plans were put in place to construct the Dalmunach distillery back in 2012, and the stills were ready to be fired up in October of last year. With the capability of producing 10 million litres of spirit each year, Dalmunach will be supporting the continued growth of Chivas Brothers well known blends, like Chivas Regal, Royal Salute and Ballantine’s.

Ballantine’s Want To Make #WhiskyEmoji Happen

whisky emoji ballantines

They say a picture speaks a thousand words. If this is true, then emoji means you could write a novel in no time at all. If you’ve not got a clue what emoji are, they’re a selection of tiny little cartoons used mostly on mobile phones in texts, which range from the normal (dog, cat, car, etc…) to the frankly ridiculous (man in a bathtub, an aubergine, dollar bill with wings, etc…). Just looking at the assortment of little emoji on my phone now, I see a best-selling novel starting to appear…

Santa and one of the Queen’s Guards found a turtle near a volcano. They were happy and drove a tractor to a castle where they saw the head of the Statue of Liberty and a ghost. To celebrate they rode a horse into the city to enjoy a… whisky? But, but, but, but… There’s no whisky emoji!

Ballantine’s Brasil!

Ballantine's Brasil

You put the lime in the Ballantine’s, you drink ’em both together,
Put the lime in the Ballantine’s, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the Ballantine’s, drink ’em both up,
Put the lime in the Ballantine’s, and call me in the morning…

Flavoured whisky, eh? Obviously not that though. What I should say, of course, is flavoured whisky liqueurs and whisky-based spirit drinks, eh? This one’s a little different to many, however. First of all, it’s not honey flavoured (or even cherry flavoured). Secondly, it’s essentially made by actually steeping lime peel in Scotch whisky, in the cask.

More Boutique-y Whisky. New releases from Kilchoman, Glentauchers, Littlemill and Glen Garioch.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company Kilchoman, Littlemill, Glentauchers and Glen Garioch

Well that was quite a Christmas.

In fact it’s been so busy that 4 new releases have passed us by with nary a mention. Changing that, now I am here with the writing about things. Yes.

Without further ado, onto the explanations behind the crazy stuff that’s fallen out of my head and onto paper.

First up this time, we’ve got an absolute belter of an Islay Whisky, from Kilchoman.

Heavy Sherry, Fresh Bourbon, Grain and ‘something a bit special’. TBWC strikes again.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company October releases

Told you we’d be back soon (and we’re not done yet)…

Another week, and another 4 brand-spanking-new releases from That Boutique-y Whisky Company have hit the shelves in time for Christmas. Once again I’m left trying to justify the madness that’s escaped from my bonce and onto the labels of these fine drams…

So – let’s start with the most obvious of the 4. A Giant with a fondness for Jam Sandwiches stealing a giant hat from a dunnage warehouse whilst all unnecessary on Bourbon. That? That.

Ballantine’s 12 Year Old Trip – Part Two

Ballantines helmet

So – with the distillery tour over and done with, it was time to move onto the main event; that which we had all been invited along to see. The deconstruction of Ballantine’s 12 Year Old.

Before we get into all that though, I’d like everyone to take a second to behold the image below:
