Glenlivet Launch Peated Cask Nàdurra After Claiming Top Spot

Glenlivet Nadurra Peated

This summer saw The Glenlivet overtake Glenfiddich to become the best selling single malt Scotch whisky in the world, having enjoyed +11% net sales growth in the last financial year. The gap had been steadily closing for a long time and this follows The Glenlivet’s milestone of selling over a million nine litre cases in a year by last September.

In September of this year they also began work on another *huge* expansion project at the distillery, doubling the capacity to 21 million litres(!), which will make it the largest malt whisky distillery in Scotland. It was only back in 2010 that the capacity was increased from 6 million to 10.5 million litres, an increase that was larger than the capacity of most distilleries. When Pernod Ricard-owned Chivas Brothers stated that their mission was to make The Glenlivet the number one single malt back in 2004, it seemed extremely ambitious (at the time Glenfiddich outsold them around 2:1). Their growth, especially in the last five years, has been nothing short of astonishing.

Coastal Whisky: The Curious Relationship Between Whisky and the Seas

Coastal Whisky Bowmore

Some whiskies can be said to have a ‘coastal’ or ‘maritime’ character, and invariably these are also whiskies that I absolutely love. In fact, these seaside malts are the reason I became interested in whisky in the first place, and the very best examples are still probably my favourite spirits in the world. This is personal taste, of course, and whilst I love most of the gods’ rich tapestry of whisky flavour profiles, I just happen to be a sucker for the Neptunian ones. So, consider me your Neil Oliver as we embark on a journey of discovery and also consider exactly how is it that some malts seemingly take on the very taste of the coast. This, is whisky on the edge… *Cue music*

Global Online Whisky Retailer of the Year, World’s Best Blended Whisky & more…

World Whiskies 2014 Awards

So – it’s that time of year again.

Last week, we attended the Whisky Magazine World Whiskies Awards (and Icons of Whisky), and came away with a slew of trophies and awards to show for another year’s hard work.

First things first – we’re absolutely delighted to announce that we’ve retained our crown as ‘World’s Best Online Whisky Retailer’ for the third year on the trot. An absolutely fabulous achievement which we’re immensely proud of. We’ve said this before (and will keep on shouting it from the rooftops) but our site remains the only purpose-built online whisky shop coded from the ground up. It took an extraordinary amount of effort to build something that wasn’t based on a standard e-commerce platform, and we’re all hugely proud of the software stack we’ve built.

VIP Balblair Distillery Tour Winner Announced!

Not the Oscars

Twitter is all a-buzz like a bag of bees in a barber shop with lots of gossip about winners. They must have heard that we were announcing the winner of our Balblair competition today! It could have been because there was a massive academy awards show on TV just the other night or it could be about us. But as there have been no good films made since Back To The Future in 1985, all the gossip must be about our competition!

This does beg the question: Who leaked this information about us announcing the Balblair competition winner to Twitter?

Win A VIP Trip To The Balblair Distillery

Balblair distillery

What time is it? There are countless pop-culture references I could make in response to that question, including Beastie Boys lyrics, video game quotes and good old-fashioned internet memes (see below), but I think I’ll just be super sensible today and say it’s Competition time!!!

You might think that making up a new time of the day to go along with ‘lunch time’ and ‘dinner time’ (which is much more sinister if you grew up playing ‘What’s The Time Mr. Wolf?’) isn’t very sensible, but you can’t argue with winning awesome prizes, can you?

Exclusive Bottling – Balblair 1990 Peated Cask – MoM Exclusive

Balblair 1990 Peated Cask

It’s an exciting one, this…

It’s not often that we get involved with Exclusive, Single-Cask bottlings direct from the distilleries themselves, as there’s generally much better value to be had from independent bottlings. We do lots of them instead. Lots and lots.

Every now and then though, something comes along that wouldn’t usually be available on the independent market.

This is one such bottling. A (very, very rare) Peated Balblair. Well, I say that – it’s actually a Balblair that’s been stored in a cask previously used to hold Peated Whisky. Sort of Peated through the medium of cheating. A Cheaty-Peaty whisky if you will.

Balblair Competition

Balblair Competition

Balblair have teamed up with WIRED Magazine to come up with a very cool competition with some equally cool prizes. The distillery is encouraging amateur photographers, and the competition will run from September to October.

To enter, photographers have to submit shots which encapsulate Balblair’s motto: “timed to perfection”. It’s that simple, and we reckon there are going to be some brilliant submissions. More…

Our trip to Balblair, Knockdhu, and Pulteney

Washback at Old Pulteney

It’s a welcome occupational hazard, being one of the largest whisky retailers on the web, that from time to time, distilleries, distributors and agents will want to show you ‘where it all comes from’ so to speak…

Recently, Master of Malt were fortunate enough to be invited on a trip to see the working distilleries of Balblair, Knockdhu (where An Cnoc whisky is made) and Old Pulteney. What made this trip slightly different from many others that we’ve been on over the years is that it was an all-expenses paid trip organised solely for whisky bloggers. More…
