We take a look at how Scotch whisky is embracing cocktails, competition and change with Auchentoshan and the New Malt Order.

You know it as the producer of triple distilled Scotch. But Auchentoshan is evolving its identity through its New Malt Order program. Over the last three years the competition has brought some of the world’s finest bartenders together with an aim to challenge perceptions, innovate and collaborate to create a limited-edition expression of whisky.

It’s part of a larger movement within the industry to welcome a more diverse consumer base. It’s become commonplace to see many brands intent on questioning how we drink Scotch now and how it will change in the future. This is often expressed by embracing modern cocktail culture and the bartending community.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to the Lowland whisky distillery in September 2018 to see how the New Malt Order works and to speak to Ron Welsh, master blender at Auchentoshan, on what it has achieved so far.

If you’ve been thinking about breaking out the sherried whisky from its summer slumber, you’re in good company. We’ve got a whole bunch of ace sherried whiskies to enjoy during the chillier months…

As the fiercely mild September weather continues to cause a polite ruckus outside the window, we’re diving into autumn head-first. Everyone is wearing about five sweatshirts. We’ve spruced up the halls of MoM Towers with decorative gourds. Nobody is daring to go outside to forage lunch items for fear of frostbite and the bite of frostcrocodiles. It’s all very thrilling. However, none of this compares to the excitement of unearthing our favourite sherried whiskies from the cupboards where they sheltered from the harsh rays of the sun.

Another week comes to a close, so it’s time for a round-up of booze stories to help you start your weekend with a brain full of knowledge – it’s The Nightcap!

It’s Friday! Unless you’re in Australia, where it’s probably next Wednesday. For those of you in Oz, keep powering through hump day. For everyone else, it’s time to grab a tasty beverage and have a gander at the booze news from this week with The Nightcap.

And today has been a news fest! If the Nightcap wasn’t enough for you, Macallan owner Edrington announced its financial results with a bit of a bang: as well as posting 7% growth, it also announced plans to sell Glenturret and Cutty Sark. Wowzers.

Elsewhere on the Master of Malt blog this week; Annie looked at the world of Bourbon alongside Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe and picked out the blends you’ll want to boast about. Sam took a glance at Tomatin’s turnover (of the money variety, nothing to do with delicious baked goods). Kristy headed (just) north of the border to taste the first whiskies from the Annandale Distillery, and looked at how everyone goes to the pub when it’s sunny.

Henry didn’t quite share the enthusiasm for the sunny weather this week, as he introduced us all to Light Strike Awareness Day (it’s a thing), as well as showing off his knowledge of popular Scotch whiskies around the world, and exploring an upcoming Island distillery.

Phew. On the with booze news!

This week, tens of thousands will descend upon the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to marvel at some of Britain’s most brilliant blooms. Indulge your inner Alan Titchmarsh with these fragrant drams – no green fingers necessary.

Chelsea Flower Show has graced the grounds of London’s Royal Hospital Chelsea every year since 1913 (except for during the two World Wars, naturally), in a room large enough to comfortably fit 500 London buses. This five-day floral spectacle is a British institution. It’s Crufts for flower fanatics.

If you’ve got hayfever just thinking about it, why not pay homage to horticulture from the comfort of your very own garden with a dram in-hand? After all, floral doesn’t necessarily have to mean ‘perfumed’.

Whisky Advent Calendar

So, what do we have behind window number 11 of The Whisky Advent Calendar from Drinks by the Dram? Why it’s the fourth batch of That Boutique-y Whisky Company‘s Arran single malt whisky!*

Each of the Arrans in this series features illustrator Emily Chappell and a friend stranded on a desert island after an ill-fated kayaking trip. As you may know, there are often subtle differences between the labels of Boutique-y batches, however, and if you look carefully on the right hand side of Batch 4… you’ll see that she’s actually put up her Christmas tree!

Auchentoshan Three Wood

They say that when things come in threes, they’re all the more pleasing for it. That’s the rule of three. If today’s anything to go by then ‘they’ may well be on to something, as the 3cl dram in our Whisky Advent Calendars is a delicious Lowland single malt which is distilled three times and matured in three different types of cask (ex-Pedro Ximénez, bourbon and Oloroso)!

So I trust you’ll enjoy your Auchentoshan Three Wood, and why not also make the most of my treats below for Day 9 (that’s three threes, by the way).

Ho ho ho! (<-See, pleasing.)

Auchentoshan 1988 Wine Cask Finish

A 25 year old 1988 vintage. That’s quite enough about me though. Feeling a little guilty that I haven’t got to this whisky already (we received the package with the sample about a month ago), I’m now making a concious effort in these busy ‘already-sort-of-started-but-also-still-building-up-to-Christmas-retailing’ times to get to it before my birthday, after which I’ll suddenly have a little less in common with it.

Everybody enjoys getting their hands on a whisky distilled in the year of their birth, it’s fun. It’s one of those things that shouldn’t really matter perhaps, but many people are willing to fork out that little bit (or lot-a-bit) extra to get their paws on something from ‘their vintage’. Something that’s spent the same amount of time on this oblate spheroid as they have. Indeed, some whisky lovers go out of their way to secure these as often as possible. But if it’s the same age as you as well? Better still, surely?
