Indian single malt, eh? Something you may or may not have tried before, but as a man of the world I can assure you that top quality whisky is now being produced across the globe! The Paul John you’ll find in the Whisky Advent Calendar today is produced in Goa, India by John Distilleries and their master distiller, Michael John (amusingly, no relation).

Their Edited expression is made using whiskies produced from both Indian 6-row barley from the Himalayan foothills and peated barley from Scotland, with the final single malt containing 15% of the peated spirit. It’s matured in bourbon casks for probably around 3-5 years but, as with fellow Indian whisky Amrut, the tropical climate causes greater evaporation (around 12-13% a year compared to ‘only’ 2% or so in Scotland). This in turn means they effectively mature faster and even if there’s no real substitute for time, the results are darned impressive!

World Whiskies Awards 2013

Hot on the heels of our success at the Off License News Drinks Retailing Awards, the World Whiskies Awards 2013 were presented last week at the Waldorf Hotel in London, and, erm, we cleaned up again*.

I’m not going to re-hash the recent blog post I wrote about our success at the OLN awards, but suffice it to say, there’s a reasonable-length post here about the innovations and initiatives we’ve launched in the past 12 months. It’s well worth a read if you’ve not already.

You want more than that you say?

It’s kind of hard to know where to begin. The events of the weekend before last have all converged into a bit of a blur. Not so much because of the alcohol, but rather the simply dizzying array of tastings, masterclasses, quizzes, meals and world-class whiskies which were thrust upon us over the course of the weekend… yet with all the activity, we came away feeling really rather impressed at just how relaxed and informal the weekend managed to be.

In September of last year, Overasselt, a once peaceful Dutch village, was alight with the warmth and revelry of a happy, if slightly raucous bunch of whisky connoisseurs from all over Europe. Drams were raised for an entire weekend filled with masterclasses, tastings, wholesome food and great music. We are, of course, talking about Maltstock!

We’ve posted this to announce that a contingent from Master of Malt will be heading up on Friday 3rd September to take part in this year’s malty madness. We’ve sent a crack team of whisky aficionados, armed to the teeth with Master of Malt bottlings and, naturally, a good selection of our 3cl drams.

A little about the distillery…

The Amrut distillery was founded in Bangalore (or Bengaḷūru as it’s known in India), an area known as India’s Silicon Valley. Originally producing dark rums and brandy, it wasn’t until the ‘80s that Amrut began to distil single malt.

Interestingly, Indian whisky is bottled after only a few years of ageing. The reason for this is the intense climate which speeds maturation to the extent that 12% of each barrel is lost every year to the angels’ share (more than 6 times that of Scotland!).

To create something completely original Amrut distilled Fusion from both Indian and Scottish barley and before tasting we’re already expecting Amrut’s trademark fruity, malty house style, so here goes…
