American Single Malt Whisky

American single malt whisky is having a moment. The United States officially recognised it as a category in late 2024. This marks the first new American whiskey category in over 52 years. Here’s the skinny. Producers must use a mash of 100% malted barley made in the United States. Distillers must distil the spirit to 160 proof or less. They must carry out every stage at one distillery in the United States. Producers must mature American single malt whiskey in oak casks. These can be used, charred new, or uncharred new oak barrels. Each cask must not exceed 700 litres and must remain in the United States. Producers cannot add neutral spirits, flavourings, or other additives. They may add caramel colouring only if they declare it on the label. The ruling also defines straight American single malt whiskey. Producers must age it for at least two years. You can explore this superb new category on the Master of Malt blog.
