Mums (and mum-like figures*) are pretty great. They listen to us moan when we get a parking ticket. They talk us out of buying life-sized Bigfoot statues. Some of them bake nice cakes. Mother’s Day (Sunday 11 March**) is an excellent reminder to make a fuss of her, and we reckon you should make the most of it.

For the most part, sweet treats are predictable and flowers scream ‘I bought this gift less than 10 minutes before coming over’. We’ve got a few preliminary suggestions, however. A statue of Putin riding a bear topless over Russia? A yodelling pickle? This unnecessary wall decal?

Perhaps not. If you’re keen to go one better than your siblings, buy her a bottle of something lovely this Mother’s Day. Better still, whip her up a cocktail with said booze. And you know what? She’ll probably share it, because she’s your mum and that’s what mums do.

When will rum’s golden hour arrive?

For years, industry insiders have been prophesying rum’s meteoric rise – but the category is still waiting in the wings. What is rum doing to move forward, and how can it attract new fans? A group of experts pondered its prospects at the first ever Think Rum event.

It has heritage akin to Scotch whisky and the regional diversity found in gin, so why isn’t rum taken as seriously? Well, the category is broad and complex for starters. It’s also privy to a party image, and largely underrepresented in bars and pubs. However, that’s not to say rum is struggling – far from it. In fact, UK sales topped £1 billion for the first time ever in 2017.

For this level of popularity to be sustainable, rum must not rest on its laurels. Now more than ever, drinkers want to be educated about the various styles and brands within any given category, and it’s important that the entire rum community, from producers to bloggers, is poised to deliver if the category is to thrive.

The glossy astronomical sphere that we call home has, against all odds, completed its ostentatious jaunt around the giant ball of hot plasma at the centre of our Solar System once again, ushering in 2018. What occurrences does this year hold for us all? Our fingers are crossed for a definitive answer to the “Were dinosaurs feathery?” debate, and a new fancy hat trend that we can get on board with. With all that mystery ahead of us, how about we clear something up and unveil what Master of Malt Dram Club members will be receiving in their Tasting Sets this month?

Is there a more festive way to toast New Year’s Eve than with a Punch that lists Douglas Fir needles among its ingredients? Banks Rum has partnered with three acclaimed cocktail experts for their take on the historic serve….

Punch has enjoyed somewhat of a revival as of late. Made with five key ingredients – alcohol, spice, sugar, citrus and water – and served in a sharing bowl, it’s the ultimate social serve. Since it needs to be pre-prepared, there’s no need to play bartender all night. Plus it’s relatively simple to put together, and it makes for a pretty slick centrepiece. Lots of oohs and aahs, if you’re into all that.

So, you’ve decided Punch is the way forward this New Year’s Eve. How to pick a recipe? No-one wants to shell out on the ingredients for an entire bowl of Punch and end up with a watery bowl of regret. You need a source you can rely on. Thankfully, the folk at Banks Rum have recognised this, and they’ve recruited some of the best in the bar biz to concoct three serves (one super-easy, one a little more difficult, and a technical one for the drinks whizzes among us) to wow your guests with.

It was once the powerhouse of South America, but over the last 20 years Venezuela has been subject to unrelenting economic and political crises. We discovered how its oldest rum distillery, Santa Teresa, became an engine of transformation for a country in chaos…

Venezuela is beleaguered and broken. The government has racked up gargantuan debts that it cannot afford to pay. The value of the country’s main commodity, oil, has nosedived. A national poll revealed that food shortages are so severe, the average Venezuelan living in extreme poverty lost 19 pounds in weight during 2016.  Those who can afford to leave are fleeing in their millions.

But in the midst of the crime, the corruption, and the humanitarian crises, there are glimmers of change, led by trailblazers like Santa Teresa. Since we couldn’t visit the Hacienda in person, the Hacienda came to us – well, to a beautiful house in the centre of Madrid – where Luis Viera Landaluce, Santa Teresa’s regional marketing manager, transported us through the estate’s 221-year history…

Seven is your heaven today folks, with #WhiskyAdvent saving us from the rigmarole with another delightful dram. It’s time to discover what’s behind window #7 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar

As the first week of December concludes, you’re probably aware that we’ve rapidly reached the time of year that’s spent nervously shuffling through office Christmas parties or bemusedly sitting in the audience of school nativity plays (although, it must be said, replacing the three wise men with The Avengers was an odd, but brilliant touch).

Well, this festive season, let’s claw back some ‘me time’. Here to remind you of the joy that this time of year can bring, we have a fantastic single malt waiting to be savoured behind window #7… it’s Roe & Co Irish Whiskey!

It’s December. Honestly, we’re as surprised as you at how well it sneaked up on us. Let’s have a gander at what Master of Malt Dram Club members will be getting this month (it’s not coal, by the way).

December crept up on us like a cat on its tiptoes this year. We’re not sure if cats technically have toes, let alone tips of toes, but the simile still stands – we are incredibly perplexed at the fact that it is December. We’re not sad about it, by any means – December brings all sorts of goodies, like mince pies, the Tom Hanks classic Big on TV at least four times and a new month of our Dram Club! Let’s see what members will be enjoying with their toast to 2018!
