Down those tools and pick up a dram: it’s Friday, folks! And with the last day of the working week comes your regular round-up of delicious developments from the wonderful world of booze. It can only be The Nightcap!

Happy Friday, team! We made it. Perhaps you’ve been following all the highs and lows of the World Cup (soz, Germany) and are relishing today as a football-free period of recovery. Or maybe you’ve eschewed all things FIFA and have been basking in the summer sunshine instead (it’s been SIZZLING here in the UK). Either way, there’s a high chance some of this week’s biggest stories might have passed you by. Which is why we’re here to help!

So before we dig into the main Nightcap round-up, let’s look back over the last seven days of all things booze…

Potential gin droughts and whiskey made with beavers. It’s all kicking off, isn’t it? The Nightcap is here to fill you in on this week’s booze news.

Look at a calendar. Or your phone. Or the bottom right/top right corner of your computer screen (dependent on what operating system you’re using). Notice that today is Friday. Revel in the joy of Friday, for it ushers in a new edition of The Nightcap, with all its booze news goodness. Revel in it. Go on. We’ll wait.

June is here, bringing a bounty of good things – the official start of summer, a particularly popular globe-spanning tournament of the football variety and new Master of Malt Dram Club Tasting Sets!

You may have noticed that June is here. There are many telltale of this, whether it be the generally not awful weather, ill-advised purchases of straw hats skyrocketing or even just looking at a calendar and whispering to yourself “How is it June? I don’t understand.” Yes, we’re nearing the halfway point of 2018 already, even though it feels like we only just said goodbye to that garbage fire of a year known as 2017 yesterday. The passage of time is mysterious. However, the drams that Master of Malt Dram Club members will be receiving in their June Tasting Sets are no longer a mystery! Let’s take a look…

Happy Friday, team! It’s a wrap on the week that was, which means we have another edition of The Nightcap for you! Read on for news of distillery developments, brilliant new bars, and intriguing product developments…

It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday… (you’re welcome for the earworm). It’s time to down tools for the weekend and reflect on another seven days in drinks.

Before we crack on with The Nightcap proper, let’s recall another stellar week on the blog. On Monday we got set for the Chelsea Flower Show with Annie’s round-up of deliciously floral whiskies – whether plants are your thing or not, it’s a sublime list of sunny-day sippers. Then on Tuesday we were VERY excited. We got to share a sneak peek inside Macallan’s new distillery following our secret visit back in April. It’s definitely one to add to the bucket list!

Charge your glasses and ready your bunting, folks – the royal wedding is officially upon us! To mark the occasion in the only way we know how, we’ve reimagined 10 of the royal family as cocktail serves. Enjoy!

For anyone who hasn’t been paying attention (and apologies if you’ve been hiding from it all), tomorrow Prince Harry, sixth in line to the British throne, and Meghan Markle, actor and activist, will wed at Windsor Castle in what promises to be one of the most quintessentially British shindigs of the entire year.

Last week, East London Liquor Company steamrollered its original crowdfunding target of £750,000 in a mere 24 hours. Here, founder Alex Wolpert reflects on four transformative years, details the distillery’s next steps, and anticipates the future of English whisky with his hyper-local London Rye.

“It’s been quite a week,” a humble Wolpert tells me over the phone, and I don’t doubt him for a second. The gin, vodka and whisky distillery – east London’s first for more than a century – exceeded the £1 million marker of its Crowdcube campaign within four days, with investments ranging from £10 to £175,000. At the time of writing, ELLC is making clear headway on its amended target of £1.5m.

May we announce that we have arrived upon the month of May, and this may bring a wealth of new Master of Malt Dram Club tasting sets? We may do such a thing.

If you couldn’t guess from the extremely high-level wordplay within that little preamble, it is now May. This is exciting for numerous reasons, including the multiple Bank Holidays for folks here in the UK, an excuse to make Star Wars puns on the 4th of May, Cinco de Mayo, Eurovision, and a whole bunch of new Master of Malt Dram Club tasting sets! Let’s see what our Dram Club members can look forward to this month…

April has arrived, bringing with it a bounty of daffodils and drams – oh yes, it’s time to see what Master of Malt Dram Club members will be enjoying this month!

It’s technically spring here at MoM Towers, but you might not notice that as we continue to claim any cloud that comes our way is the Beast from the East on its way back to finish the job of unsettling our transport system and stealing all the bread from the supermarket. To take our mind off of such harrowing circumstances, why don’t we have a look at what Master of Malt Dram Club members will be finding within their Tasting Sets this month?

To celebrate International Women’s Day, this week we’ll be championing a host of female spirits pioneers who are at the top of their respective fields. Today we take five with Joy Spence of Appleton Estate, who, more than 20 years ago, became the world’s first female master blender.

Each year on 8 March, International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect on progress made, catalyse meaningful change, and celebrate the women who have made strides towards gender parity.

But hold up. Why is International Women’s Day so important? Things are pretty equal, aren’t they? Firstly, no, and secondly, let me hit you with some stats. According to the World Economic Fund’s Global Gender Gap Report, it will take another 217 years to achieve gender parity.

Let that sink in. That’s 217 years before women and men are completely equal in terms of health, education, economy and politics. Mind-blowing. The same report reveals that Iceland, Norway, Finland, Rwanda and Sweden are the five best countries to live in if you’re a woman. The UK is 15th. The US? 49th.

March has arrived, meaning Master of Malt Dram Club members can tuck in to another expertly-chosen selection of drams!

The shortest month of 2018 is in the rear-view mirror. March is here, and it has brought a brand new bundle of Master of Malt Dram Club Tasting Sets for you to get your noodle-y appendages on. However, March has yet to offer up an explanation as to why there is currently snow on the ground here at MoM Towers, or why everyone got so excited about the Winter Olympics this year. So, y’know, March still has work to do. Either way, let’s look at those aforementioned Dram Club Tasting Sets before anyone gets any ideas about linking those two mysteries together and starting a brand new conspiracy theory website.
