Happy Friday, folks! Here’s The Nightcap to help you roll on into the weekend armed with a plethora of booze news. Always handy if you’re looking to impress down the pub/on a hot date/out in a bar*…

Welcome to the weekend, team! Step away from the workload and pick up a dram. You deserve it. Friday evening is here! (Apologies as always if you’re a non-nine-to-fiver and are indeed working at the weekend… join the vibe when you can.)

It’s been a short week here at MoM Towers thanks to the summer bank holiday Monday. But that hasn’t stopped us bringing you all manner of news over on the blog this week.

On Tuesday we unveiled our latest competition of much excitement – win a VIP trip to Speyside and discover The BenRiach Distillery! Then on Wednesday we got hold of Pernod Ricard’s annual report and crunched the numbers to see how the likes of Jameson, The Glenlivet and Chivas Regal performed over the last year.

Yesterday we had a blog double whammy: Annie talked us through all things aquavit in her beginner’s guide, before we shed a little bit more light onto Diageo’s Special Releases 2018 line-up. Not long until the full reveal: check back on 12 September for details of all 10 bottlings in full.

Last night we were treated to a highly classified tasting of Diageo’s Special Releases 2018 line-up. Yes, we felt like secret agents – and yes, the whole thing was GOOOOOOOOD. We’ve got the lowdown on [most of] the whiskies for you, right here, right now.

First up… We’re publishing this post a little sooner than expected. We pinky-promised to keep all the Special Releases secrets shtumn until 12 September, i.e. the official press launch date. But! This afternoon we were alerted that not every drinks writer is as good as keeping secrets as we are. Boo. But it DOES mean we can now bring you some details of how the Special Releases 2018 line-up actually tastes!

Every year the Special Releases collection gets tongues (and taste buds) wagging. The [usually] 10-strong collection of Scotch whiskies from an array of Diageo distilleries is a showcase of cask-strength deliciousness, a celebration of flavour, and there’s often one of two unusual bottlings thrown in for good measure… This year was no exception.

With Pernod Ricard’s full-year sales results hot off the press, we take a peek at how the likes of Scotch whiskies The Glenlivet and Chivas Regal, Ireland’s Jameson, Cognac brand Martell and Absolut vodka fared in 2017/18. Spoiler alert: Scotch wasn’t the star of the show…

It’s results season, folks! Big companies left, right and centre are publishing their annual (or quarterly) reports, giving us an insight into how they’re getting on sales-wise. Today it’s the turn of Pernod Ricard to disclose its full-year data to the end of June. We had a nose through the docs and crunched the numbers to see how some of the world’s biggest drinks brands got on…

Say hello to Friday with this week’s Nightcap, packed with the biggest booze news stories from the past seven days in one handy digest. Enjoy!

Happy Friday, folks! The weekend is here and we’re excited. For this is not just any weekend. Here in the UK it’s the super-duper mega-fantastic bumper three-day August Bank Holiday weekend (if you need to stock up, we’ve got everything you need booze-wise to celebrate. There’s just about still time to order!).

But before we get toooo carried away, let’s recap the week that was. On Monday, Annie came to rescue unloved drinks cabinets and cocktail kits the world over with her must-haves for a dynamite home bar. Then on Tuesday Henry took a trip down the road to Greensand Ridge, discovering a world of local rums and well as gins.

The weekend is here, folks! And with the promise of two days of raving (or behaving) comes this week’s Nightcap, our digestif of the week’s top booze news stories. Enjoy!

Step away from that keyboard, put the high viz down. The weekend is here! While you unwind with a dram, why not catch up on the week’s goings on from the world of drinks?

On Monday, Annie explored the world’s best spirits-themed hotels for booze lovers, while on Tuesday Adam brought us his top tipples for the upcoming bank holiday weekend (soz if you don’t get the bonus day off where you are!). Then, on Wednesday, Annie checked out the delectable world of savoury gins – herbal is most definitely delicious in our book. Then yesterday we published our chit-chat with Alasdair Day, co-founder of R&B Distilleries, where he shares the family history of all things Tweeddale. It was a good week indeed!

But what other liquor-related activities else went down this week? We’re glad you asked…

Love visiting distilleries? So does everyone, it would seem! The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has crunched the numbers and it turns out we collectively made a record 1.9 million visits to Scotland’s whisky distilleries in 2017!

1.9 million people is the equivalent of the entire population of Latvia, or of Guinea Bissau. Or the same as everyone in Cyprus visiting a distillery twice. It’s also an 11.4% rise year-on-year, and a figure 45% higher than 2010’s visitor numbers. That’s a hefty increase.

And it also puts whisky distilleries squarely on the tourism road map. The National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle are the top attractions outside London, and they both attracted 2 million visitors each in 2017. The distilleries are catching up!
