We headed up to London last night for the 2018 eCommerce Awards, and came back with the Best Food & Drink eCommerce trophy in our mitts!

For the third year in a row, we’ve donned our finest, most snappiest garb and headed for the annual eCommerce Awards in London, once again taking place at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square. The evening was hosted by actual wizard Ben Hanlin, so we thought we’d be lucky to escape without being turned into (finely-dressed) frogs. However, we did make it out without being transmogrified, and we made it out with a bloomin’ trophy in our hands – the Best Food & Drink eCommerce trophy to be exact!

Friday has arrived, meaning another edition of The Nightcap is in order, complete with all the booze news from the week that was. Surf’s up, folks.

Look at a calendar. Whether that calendar is made of paper or pixels, it’ll tell you that today is Friday. Unless you’re reading this on a day that isn’t Friday – then the calendar will tell you that it was once Friday. That’s generally how calendars work. Sometimes they give you the definition of interesting words or a picture of a small dog hanging around in a fishing village, but mostly they exist to tell you when Friday is. It’s today. Therefore, The Nightcap is a thing.

Firstly, let’s see what happened on the blog this week. Our Annie recapped the first leg of her visit to Piedmont with Cocchi, then showed us how to drink like a particularly famous British super spy. Kristy got the low-down on the final addition to Diageo’s 2018 Special Releases (they’re now available to pre-order, too!). Henry chatted to Cabby’s Rum founder Moses Odong about making rum in London and The Knowledge, then gave us a Macallan history lesson. Phew.

On to the rest of this week’s booze news!

With the arrival of 28 rare Macallan expressions, we take a moment to delve into the rich history of probably the most famous distillery in Scotland, if not the world.

The buyers at Master of Malt have been wearing their Indiana Jones outfits recently (they do actually have special outfits for whisky sleuthing) and have discovered a stash of rare Macallans that will have enthusiasts salivating. There are further details below, but we thought this was as good an excuse as any to look at a distillery that really does sanction the use of that overused word, iconic.

Macallan dates back to 1824 when a distillery was founded by Alexander Reid at Craigellachie. Many distilleries were built (and many illegal ones went legitimate) around this time due to the 1823 Excise Act which liberalised licensing laws. The distillery passed through various owners until 1892 when it was bought by Roderick Kemp, a giant of whisky who at one point owned Talisker, though not at the same time as The Macallan. He completely rebuilt the distillery and renamed it Macallan-Glenlivet. It was common practice to add ‘Glenlivet’, the area’s best-known whisky, as a suffix to your distillery. Nowadays many distilleries would love to put Macallan after their names, though I think Macallan’s lawyers would have something to say about that.

Last month we joined Diageo to taste the Special Releases 2018 cohort – but there was one expression we were asked to keep under wraps. Until now. The mysterious 10th Scotch whisky expression is… Cladach!

‘What IS Cladach?’, we hear you cry. No, it is not the first release from a secret new distillery (although like many new releases it doesn’t carry an age statement). It is a blended malt from six coastal distilleries: Caol Ila, Clynelish, Lagavulin, Oban, Inchgower and Talisker. And it’s delicious.

Rejoice, whisky fans! Much-loved expression GlenDronach Revival 15 Year Old is making a much-anticipated return. We travelled up to Scotland to taste the new liquid – and it was well worth the trip.

July 2015 was a black month for Scotch whisky lovers. Just over three years ago, it was announced that GlenDronach’s 15 year old Revival single malt was being discontinued. Aged in oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks and first launched in 2009, The Revival had become a cult whisky among the cognoscenti. There were whisky-scented tears all over the internet when the distillery’s owners, the BenRiach Distillery Company, announced its demise citing lack of maturing stocks. But you can now dry those eyes as we can exclusively reveal that GlenDronach Revival 15 Year Old is back!

We received huge news this week from Speyside Scotch whisky creator The Balvenie: Kelsey McKechnie will become the brand’s apprentice malt master!

The Balvenie had only just released a new celebratory, limited edition single malt Scotch whisky. Now the brand has named a malt master that will eventually succeed the legendary David C. Stewart MBE.

Introducing: apprentice malt master Kelsey McKechnie!

The Balvenie chose to mark the important milestone in the history of the Scotch whisky distillery with an event titled ‘A Moment In Time’. It included a tasting of rare Balvenie liquids at Greenwich Planetarium. So, we did the decent thing and got an interview with Stewart and McKechnie – we need to know more about The Chosen One (I don’t think that’s pushing it!).
