Exciting news, rum fiends: That Boutique-y Drinks Company has unveiled its latest collection of independently bottled spirits. We hightailed it up to London to check out the nine inaugural expressions from That Boutique-y Rum Company!

At MoM Towers we tend to be fans of small-batch spirits. Single cask whiskies, unusual gins, intriguing Tequilas… Oh yes. So when news reached us that the folks behind That Boutique-y Whisky Company and That Boutique-y Gin Company had snaffled up vats and casks from some of the world’s most thrilling rum producers… Well, frankly, we were beyond excited. And behold: That Boutique-y Rum Company was born!

The world of rum is a big, bold, and diverse one. Where to start? With rum expert Peter Holland, off of The Floating Rum Shack, of course. Holland himself helped to create the range, which spans unusual cask offerings, high-ester pot-still delights, and even an agricole-style bottling from Portugal.

Another work week is coming to a close, which means it’s time to open up a treasure chest of booze news – it’s The Nightcap!

It’s Friday once again, folks. We’re certain many of you will be taking this weekend as a chance to continue working on those intricate Halloween costumes (I’m going to be dressed as a hogshead this year – still lots of coopering and hot glue application to be done). However, we’re also sure that there are a few of you with plenty of space in your plans to swot up on the latest booze news, which is exactly what The Nightcap is here for!

As ever, let’s have a gander at the goings-on with the MoM blog this week. Annie chatted to the folks from the UK’s first alcohol-free brewery and had a nose around Bache-Gabrielsen’s cellars. Henry took a trip down the Old Fashioned memory lane and looked to the future of Irish distillers. Adam wrapped up warm with a selection of toasty tipples perfect for autumnal nights. We also announced the winners of our VIP BenRiach trips – congratulations to the winners once again!

Now on with the news! Although it starts on a sombre note this week.

As Irish whisky and Jameson in particular continues to boom globally, Irish Distillers will be spending €150 million to increase production, warehousing and bottling capacity in Cork and Dublin.

Irish Distillers, the company behind such legendary whiskeys as Jameson, Powers and Redbreast, has announced massive investment in sites in Cork and Dublin.

€130 million of the money will be spent in Cork on expanding and upgrading the already massive New Midleton Distillery to increase capacity. Exciting new equipment will include a mechanical vapour recompression evaporator, a third mash filter, and new fermenters. And that’s not all; they’re getting a new office building too.

America wins World Whisky of the Year again in the new edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible but the big story is the rise of English and Welsh whiskies with a special section devoted to them.

The new edition of the world’s bestselling whisky book is out, and I’m afraid it’s bad news for the Scots with the title of World Whisky of the Year going to William Larue Weller (2017 Release) – the third consecutive American champion. Jim Murray commented on “its unique brilliance” and said it was the “the most delicious lesson in whiskey structure imaginable”.

The first week of October is almost Oct-OVER. Sorry. That was terrible. Sorry. Anyway, here’s The Nightcap, lots of booze news to be had.

As it turns out, October is cold. It’s almost like there’s some type of scientific reason to do with how planets move and where stars are, all of which contribute to making the start of October startlingly chilly… Either way, the work week for a lot of folks is drawing to a close, so it’s time to grab a warming tipple and dig into our weekly round-up of news from the drinks world – The Nightcap!

Brendan McCarron, head of maturing stock at the Glenmorangie Company, explains why you have to be a bit mad to enjoy Ardbeg new make, and gives us a preview of the new 22 Year Old limited edition, distilled when “the bulldozers were at the gates.”

It might surprise you to learn that Brendan McCarron is not a fan of Ardbeg new make – “Scandinavian whisky fans say they love it but I’m not sure I believe them.” He came up with some unflattering comparisons such as “warm beer drunk out of a can”. But what the new make has is “potential”.

Hendrick’s Gin producer William Grant & Sons has unveiled The Hendrick’s Gin Palace – a £13 million expansion to its site in Girvan said to be a “…playground for experimentation, invention and curiosity”.

The new base for Hendrick’s Gin not only doubles its capacity to meet demand, but houses an array of habitats for flora, machines and humans alike. This includes a wall garden, a Victorian-inspired palm house, two botanical hot houses, two still houses, a laboratory for master distiller Lesley Grace and a lecture theatre. Oh, and a bar. Obviously.

Whisky is coming! After much teasing by Diageo, it has finally been revealed what the new White Walker whisky will be and when it will appear.

As you can imagine, those in the intersection where Game of Thrones and whisky fans meet are quite excited. Jeff Peters, Vice President, Licensing & Retail at HBO, said, “We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whisky and once we saw the vision from Johnnie Walker for a way to collaborate we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now. From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with White Walker by Johnnie Walker. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping this delicious whisky as they wait for season eight and beyond.”
