Following a bumper crop of entries to our Burns Night poetry competition 2022, we are delighted to announce the winner who will receive a bottle of Glengoyne 21 Year Old, and two runners-up who will also receive whisky-based prizes.

It’s fair to say that we were surprised by the enthusiasm for this year’s Burns Night poetry competition. Normally we received about 70 entries but this year nearly 300 talented Master of Malt customers exercised their bardic muscles. If it wasn’t for the magic of computerised communication, Tonbridge Post Office would have had to take on new staff just to transport all that verse.

Burns Night Poetry Competition 2022

Here’s what you could have won

Judging the Burns Night Poetry Competition 2022

There were poems that made us laugh, some that made us cry, and others that made us scratch our heads and say, ‘what was all that about?’ Before we get onto the winners and runners-up, a special mention for Emma for rhyming “single malts” with “somersaults” and “one learns” with “third degree Burns.” Well done! We had a good chuckle at that. Also to RJR Phillips for so daringly and amusingly breaking our no rhyming ‘whisky’ with ‘frisky’ rule.

But democracy must prevail and our crack team of highly-educated judges voted for three poems in particular which we are going to run in reverse order.

Third place

So third place goes to Alyson Craddack for an amusing ode to a mouse. You win a bottle of  Aerolite Lyndsay 10 Year Old.

Careful now, how you return,

A bottle to the shelf.

Wee Beastie may just be there

And fail to move himself!

He made it from the ploughed up field,

Ran through the Kirk-yard gate,

Dodging any nasty traps

Which tempted him with bait.

Found him then, a cosy spot,

Amongst some amber brew,

And tucked away, at the very back,

He built a nest anew.

Hoping now for barley spilled,

Perhaps he’ll get a nibble?

Or better still, from an Ill-placed cap

He might just get a dribble!

Second place

In second place is a magnificently rhythmic poem about Scotland which reminded one of the judges of Doctor Seuss. Also extra points for rhyming ‘Nietzsche’ with ‘deep-fried pizza’. Congratulations Andrew Skiller! Your prize is a bottle of Islay 12 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish (Darkness) and a Regions of Scotland Whisky Tasting Set.

Scotland is home to the eagle bird,

Raspberry jam and lemon curd.

Glens and lochs, hills and mountains,

Tablet, shortbread, sherbet fountains.

Football teams with lovely grounds,

Neeps and tatties served in mounds.

Philosophers to rival Nietzsche,

Haggis, chips and deep-fried pizza.

Views across the Isle of Man,

Marmalade and Cranachan.

Red squirrels, deer and Scottish piskies,

A million different types of whisky.

Kilts and sporrans made from mink,

Pies and puddings, Cullen Skink.

Cattle, sheep and piggies too,

Stovies, scones and Irn Bru.

Scotland’s a place that will capture your heart,

And you can stuff your face with Ecclefechan Tart.

And the winner is….

And now for the winner: a perfectly-judged poem about Burns, whisky and a wee beastie. It made us laugh, smile and we think it’ll be a joy to read on Burns Night (that’s tonight!) with a few drams and a haggis. Thank you Nicky Harris. You win a bottle of Glengoyne 21 Year Old!

I’d like to put it here on record for all the world to see

I may be small, I may be brown, but “tim’rous ” isnt me.

I’ve watched that chap sat at his desk, drinking his so called “tea”

The sort of tea that makes him squint and sing of auld lang “see”?

The trouble I have gone to, to get him off to bed

So I can have the house to myself

And get me properly fed

The “tea” makes him forgetful

He often leaves good crumbs!

So I need him off to bed

Then i can call my chums

And so we feast on cheese and bread

And dance the night away

Wee tim’rous cowrin beasties all

See in a brand new day!

Thank you to everyone who entered. There were so many great poems. Until next year.

Sláinte!

Dry January 2022 doesn’t have to be boring. We’re here to bring some excitement with the first of a two-part competition…

Are you one of the millions of people across the world who has taken the vow to shun alcohol for January following weeks of festive overindulgence? Of course you are, that’s why you’re here. That or morbid curiosity. For the former, we’d here to remind you that choosing to take part in a month of no or reduced drinking doesn’t mean ordering a Diet Coke and playing with your car keys while everyone else has fun.

Especially given that every year even more fantastic low-and-no alcoholic options are launched to provide you with options and not compromises. There’s no excuse not to drink well while drinking less. And also to not go out and support your local hospitality business. Remember how hard they’ve had it the last couple of years. Don’t let them down now.

To help you on your path to low-and-no excellence, we’ve given you the opportunity to get your hands on some terrific bottles. Even more excitingly, this is just part one. In total, our Dry January competition will run for two weeks but the prize is going to be different from week one to week two. So, be sure to keep an eye out for even more amazing prizes in the future. To kick us off, we’ve got the perfect Dry January cocktail kit featuring Atopia Citrus!

Atopia Bundle competitionIn full, here’s what is up for grabs:

And all you have to do to enter is the following:

  • Follow @masterofmalt Instagram account.
  • Like this post!
  • Tag a friend you’d like to share the bundle with on our competition post.

Just successfully complete those steps and your ‘new year, new me’ bundle could soon be en route. Exciting times.

MoM ‘Dry January Bag This Bundle’ Competition 2022 open to entrants 18 years and over. Entries accepted from 12:00:00 GMT on 4 January to 17:00:00 GMT on 9 January 2022. Are you a secret poet? Do you know it? Well, hide your light under a bushel no longer because it’s time for our Burns Night Poetry Competition 2022. You could win a bottle of Glengoyne 21 Year Old. Runners up will receive Darkness Islay 12 Year Old and a Regions of Scotland whisky tasting set, or an Aerolite Lyndsay 10 Year Old Islay single malt.

You know those moments in meetings when the sensible people run out of things to say? That’s normally the opportunity for the others to propose outlandish ideas which will be tactfully shot down or crack jokes that nobody quite gets. Well, that’s how our Burns Night Poetry Competition started back in 2019. There was a lull in a meeting to discuss how we should cover Burns Night, a big event in the whisky calendar, somebody said ‘poetry competition’, and much to everyone’s surprise, we went ahead and did it.

Even more surprising is how successful it’s been. Every year we get dozens of entries, and, though some of them are awful – rhyming ‘whisky’ with ‘frisky’ is a giveaway – there’s always some that show real talent. Just take a look at the winning entries from 2019,  2020, and 2021.

Burns Night Poetry Competition 2022

Prizes for poetry, but only if you wow us…

Enter our Burns Night Poetry Competition 2022

This year we’ve upgraded the prizes so we’re expecting an even higher standard than previous years. The winner will receive a bottle of  Glengoyne 21 year old single malt worth over £140. The second place prize is a bottle of Islay 12 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish (Darkness) and a Regions of Scotland Whisky Tasting Set. And there’s a very nice bottle for the third-place entry, a bottle of Aerolite Lyndsay 10 Year Old – The Character of Islay Whisky Company

Some tasty whiskies there. All you have to do is write a poem in either English or Scots of 25 lines or less. No epics, please. Apart from those rules, you can do what you like: write in blank verse, use iambic pentameters, or come up with something totally experimental. Again, just don’t rhyme ‘whisky’ with ‘frisky.’

To get you in the mood, here’s a little something from the Bard himself, Robbie Burns:

‘My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer and following the roe,
My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.’

Stirring stuff!

The 2021 MoM Burns Night poetry competition is open to entrants 18 years and over with postage to UK addresses only. Entries accepted from 12:00 GMT on 3 January to 12:00 GMT 17 January 2022. Full T&Cs are below, but to enter simply email us at [email protected], or comment on Facebook, Instagram, or below with your poem by 17 January. The winner will be announced on Burns Night, Tuesday 25 January.

#WhiskySanta’s Glenfarclas 50 Year Old Decanter Super Wish

It’s the final Super Wish of the season and #WhiskySanta is going out with a bang.

I almost can’t bring myself to do another ‘ho, ho, ho!’ It’s bittersweet for me, this moment. The final Super Wish. I’ve loved spoiling you these last few weeks. Just ask Matthew Watkiss (@crusiccrusic) about how they feel now they have a bottle of Craigellachie 39 year old 1980 worth £3,500 on the way.

But, with Christmas this week, I’m afraid my Super Wishing is done for another year. Save for one last prize. And it’s a corker. It’s Glenfarclas 50 Year Old Decanter!

This incredible £12,000 decanter of Glenfarclas has spent 50 years ageing, which isn’t much to me but in human and, in particular, whisky terms it’s quite the thing. That half a century of maturation was spent in Spanish oak sherry casks, left to rest in cool dunnage warehouses, and only 146 bottles were produced. Oh, and that decanter is Glencairn Crystal, hand-decorated in copper complete with a copper stopper as well as a red mahogany piano-finished gift box. Tell me that isn’t going out in style…

Now, let’s do this one last time. To those who don’t know or need reminding of how to Super Wish, you’ll want to start by heading to the Glenfarclas 50 Year Old Decanter. There you’ll see the zazzy red button that says “Wish” on it. A box will pop up ready to send you onwards to a pre-populated Twitter or Facebook post. Just hit ‘publish’ and you’ve completed your wish! For Instagram, you can pop a post on your feed with the #WhiskySanta hashtag.

Wishes need to be submitted by 23:59 GMT Thursday 23 December, because on Christmas Eve I’ll be granting one! Mrs #WS will deny me her signature Christmas pudding if she sees me still working on Super Wishes on Christmas Day. Trust me when I say this folks, I will not be missing out on that pudding.

It has been an absolute pleasure doing this once again, perhaps I’ll see you next year? Best of luck on the final Super Wish!

#WhiskySanta’s Craigellachie 39 Year Old 1980 Super Wish

It’s Super Wish o’clock again, and this time we’ve got a scrumptiously well-aged Speysider up for grabs – it’s only Craigellachie 39 Year Old 1980!

Can you believe this is nearly my final Super Wish? Time goes so fast when you’re an omniscient bearded being. #Relatable.

A great big whisky-shaped congratulations has to go to rugbypicboy on Instagram who won last week’s Super Wish, the spectacular Glenfiddich 40 Year Old – Rare Collection worth £3,274.95. Everyone else is likely green with Glenfiddich envy, but there’s no time to dilly-dally. Just look what’s up next!

Craigellachie 39 Year Old 1980 Super Wish

Say hello to this single cask Craigellachie 39 Year Old 1980 from the distillery’s Exceptional Cask Series. This lip-smacker is worth £3,500 – no wonder, since it was distilled back in 1980. That’s the same year ABBA released The Winner Takes It All, which is rather fortuitous because whoever gets their hands on this juicy little number really will take it all. Time for another ABBA marathon, I think.

The whisky spent nearly four decades slumbering in a single refill ex-bourbon hogshead, and was specially chosen in 2019 by Craigellachie malt master Stephanie Macleod. Maybe I’ll change my name to Christmas master next year… Anyway, just 138 bottles of this special stuff were produced, and I’m giving away one of them!

The tasting notes on the bottle hint that it tastes like ‘charred pineapple dipped in honey, delicate oak, toasted cereal and polished antique leather’. Well, now that almost sounds better than a mince pie, doesn’t it?

To get your Super Wish on the list, just pop over to the Craigellachie 39 Year Old 1980 product page and press the big red button – the one that says “Wish” on it. A box will pop up ready to send you onwards to a pre-populated Twitter or Facebook post. All you need to do is hit ‘publish’, and your wish will be sent off into the stratosphere, through my wish-o-matic at the North Pole, and then on to MoM Towers. You have until 23:59 GMT Thursday 16 December. If you want to enter from Instagram, you can! Just pop a post on your feed with the #WhiskySanta hashtag.

There’s only one more Super Wish to go after this week, so make sure you get those requests in – though after that it’s the big day, so don’t be too sad.

Sleigh you later!
