Insider knowledge: Smokehead Extra Rare 1l whisky is named whisky by virtue of the fact it's from Scotland. If distilled in America the spelling would be Smokehead Extra Rare 1l whiskey, as opposed to whisky.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Sherry and malt, thick plumes of cool maritime smoke, barley, tar and old ropes on the beach.

Palate: Big, spicy peat - warm slabs of the stuff. Thick smoke, coal tar and iodine, a little honey, lemon zest and sticking plasters.

Finish: Long and smoky with toffee brittle and tangy fruits.

Whiskynörden

A great and very interesting smoky whisky. I love it!

Agreed. Very Ardbeg-ish

I agree with Dinis, from Portugal. I'm Scottish, but live overseas and I've started running single malt tasting sessions for small groups of internationals, trying a few different whiskies, one after the other. We then judge them on what we personally think of them (rather than what anyone else here, on MoM may have said). This one is, as you'd expect, very smoky but, we found, virtually indistinguishable from the (more expensive) Ardbeg 10. The only problem was that, at only 40%, it's a touch 'lightweight', especially if you add even just a wee bit of water. Maybe that was deliberate but, for me, that's one of the reasons it falls just a little short of, for example, the Ardbeg itself, the Bowmore 100 Degrees Proof and even the (excellent value-for-money) Bowmore Mariner. However, all round, not too bad at all.

A discovery!

Definitely a great discovery! A heavily peated, but not overdoing it at all, comes with a interesting finish. One of my recent favourites!
