What's in a name? Master of Malt 50 Year Old Speyside whisky is called whisky because it's produced in Scotland. Were it from America it would be spelled Master of Malt 50 Year Old Speyside whiskey, rather than whisky.

Master of Malt 50 Bottling Note

From our Secret Bottlings Series

The oldest and rarest whisky in our collection. This is a superbly complex and multi-layered single malt from a well-known Speyside distillery.

Tasting Note by Jim Murray (Whisky Bible 2009)

Nose: 23/25 the oak may be on the attack but firm malt, aided and abetted by the most docile of smoky backgrounds gives it just the weight and edge it needs;

Taste: 24/25 the delivery is dense and silky and now the smoke really comes into its own, adding weight and seeing off any inquisitive oak; butterscotch and honey add to the brilliance;

Finish: 24/25 long with vanilla and the softest molassed sugar imaginable pitched in the glowing embers of all that has gone before;

Balance: 24/25 a genuine masterpiece of an ancient malt showing improbable integrity and finesse. The only whisky tasted so far this year (and this is number 1,263) that I have not spat a single drop out. I don’t know if this was a 1957 cask, or ’58. On one hand I hope it was the ’57, as that was the year I was born, and on that basis it should be stunning. On the other, a pang of regret that I didn’t find this cask first and bottle it for my 50th birthday celebrations…

User Reviews of the Master of Malt 50 Year Old Speyside

Chris

Again a slightly astringent nose, but displaying a wonderful freshness, you would have though it wasn’t a day over 30! Buckets of mature honey and old, toffee’d, slightly sawdusty bourbon oak with a lovely citrus thread and a touch of smoke. Superb depth and complexity. The gentle oak vanillins open the show followed by some wonderfully juicy barley and honey. Mellow and complex with a slight grassy character. Very honeyed with a soupcon of peat smoke on the middle. Luscious and smooth with peat smoke turning to coal dust and the honey becoming quiet buttery. The length is excellent, and to think that it has been in the cask this long and still retains a lovely freshness is a testament to the character and longevity of this whisky.

More a question than a review

Is this stuff any good in a glass of Pepsi Max?

George

its very nice My son in law bought it for me as a dowry, i loves it with Chocolate cake and Cheese and onion crisps, its nice after you've had a couple of bottles of shiraz and when you haven't got anymore. you can always get the whisky out! And this one is one of the best! Also its not bad as a livener before you go milking at 5. It reminds me of ice cream.

Hard as nails
