Unavailable for 7 years even in Japan, age statement Yoichi has made an exciting return (in sadly small quantaties at this stage) to these shores! The jewel in Nikka's crown, this is traditionally made, well crafted Japanese single malt (direct-fired stills, worm tubs, proprietary yeasts, wooden washbacks) with real clarity, and notes of vanilla, fruit, some peat smoke, and a salty edge.
Plenty of fruit notes - peach stands out in particular, ripe, vibrant and subtly floral. Then there's rich vanilla custard, peat smoke and a hint of nutmeg spice.
Oily and sweet, with peat smoke following swiftly afterwards. Light oak and developing fruit notes beneath.
Appealing oak lasts on the finish.
I bought a bottle of this recently and very much enjoyed it for the smooth taste and excellent balance. its got its own well rounded character and makes a pleasant addition to any whisky collection. id recommend any whisky lover give it a spin.
I have to admit this whisky is really interesting, pro tip, put a bit on your tongue and breathe. Do not swallow. It will evolve dramatically in your mouth. All in all, a fine balanced whisky. Go for it.
I'm a fond whisky drinker. This is how whisky should taste like: smooth, yet with an enormous depth. It starts with the nose, which is complex and round. Take your time to nose it to the full extent. Then, the nip/sip. Its taste lingers and lingers, with delightfull fruitfulness, a smokeyness that doesn't overwhelm and a palate that is powerful but very ballanced. this is one of the best whisky's I've ever tasted.
I agree with the previous reviewer. I spent more time nosing this fine whiskey than actually sipping. It has a beautiful bouquet that was initially a bit spicy like cinnamon, but quickly evolved to fruity and ended on the last sip smelling of sweet delicate honey. I prefer peatier scotches, but as far as fruity whiskeys this was delightful.
Always get this when I'm in Japan and if you don't happen to visit, def try this. The Miyagikyo is wonderful also. Very rich drams, wonderful on the palate and on the way down, but the nose, like any high end whisky, is the best part. Can nose Yoichi all day. (and if you visit japan and get to grab 180ml bottles, well then you can easily sniff whenever the desire grabs you.... And btw MOM, ask Nikka to stock you with those unless they are unrealistic to sell and ship. Delicious
