Unavailable for 7 years even in Japan, age statement Yoichi has made an exciting return (in sadly small quantaties at this stage) to these shores! The jewel in Nikka's crown, this is traditionally made, well crafted Japanese single malt (direct-fired stills, worm tubs, proprietary yeasts, wooden washbacks) with real clarity, and notes of vanilla, fruit, some peat smoke, and a salty edge.
Plenty of fruit notes - peach stands out in particular, ripe, vibrant and subtly floral. Then there's rich vanilla custard, peat smoke and a hint of nutmeg spice.
Oily and sweet, with peat smoke following swiftly afterwards. Light oak and developing fruit notes beneath.
Appealing oak lasts on the finish.
A mix of Honey sweet and fresh fruits and flowers (layers, more than mix...)with a very light and cloud of smoke on finish. Surprising, different and "under control" without beeing boring as could be a simple allrounder. All seems in place like an ikebana bouquet... That's right that i'm new in whisky in general and in japanese in particular, and maybe my enthousiasm is a bit influenced and overpowered by that. But much drams (even high scored by whisky writters) disapointed me. Surely because they were just not for my palate despite their excellence. This one is made for me... Jim Murray seems to be a little disapointed, compared to older versions of this malt, in his 2013 bible. But of course, i didn't knew those older expressions of Yoichi 10, my palate has less sharpened tastebuds than any whisky writter and this whisky is a charming, amazing and delicate one for me... A jewel for my taste !
