The Yamazaki distillery matured the whisky for this release in Puncheon casks, which are much, much larger than your regular hogshead cask. A Hoggie will hold 230 litres, whereas the mighty Puncheon holds 480 litres. What this means for this Yamazaki single malt Japanese whisky is that it matures in the Puncheon slower, allowing it to gently acquire flavour from the cask. This is the 2013 Yamazaki Puncheon release.

Elderflower, sandalwood, vanilla bean and a hint of buttered rye bread. Slightly grassy at points, and water brings out a touch of white peach freshness.
More peach notes, now joined by pineapple, sultana and plum. Floral oak, developing into light cigar box and fudge.
A rush of white grape and green apple. Some spicy cinnamon right at the end.

This edition was produced as part of the Cask Series in 2013, now discontinued like the rest of the 2013 Cask series. The Sherry Cask version won the title of Best Whisky in the World 2015, subsequently the retail price rocketed. Needless to say the alternative 2013 versions like this Puncheon will follow suit.
