Released in Spring 2014, this is one of two Distiller's Reserve single malt whiskies from Suntory in Japan. This single malt from the Yamazaki distillery is jam-packed with superb red berry notes, gained from the whisky being matured in Bordeaux wine casks and Sherry casks. It also features malt matured in Mizunara casks, adding subtle fragrant oak notes.
Classic Yamazaki strawberries and dried fruits with floral notes coming from the Mizunara cask whisky. Fragrant sandalwood and maybe coconut. Certainly a whisky where you could get lost in its nose!
The dried berries remain lively on the palate (it even develops some raspberry notes along the way), but they're dialled back a bit to make room for light oak, white peach and a small amount of spice.
Vanilla lasts and lasts, with spicy but sweet cinnamon acting as a final flourish.
Top quality Japanese whisky, and excellent value too. Can't go wrong with this, really.
Having got the opportunity to try this whiskey I was excited, but overall I was disappointed with this whiskey. My preference is for a lighter fruity whiskey, which I thought this would be based on the description. Whilst this was not smokey or peaty, it had a burnt final note that I didn't enjoy.
An absolute treat to drink. Mixed with ginger ale over ice I could taste the light spice and coconut which made for a lovely long and refreshing drink. Tasted neat it’s very smooth and I tasted more berry and smoke and vanilla. It’s a great drink to share with friends and for a little evening drink when you need a treat. Very enjoyable.
Hard to describe the flavour but is starts off strong and a little spicy and woody but it has a nice smooth aftertaste, somewhat like vanilla. The smoothness is what makes this different to other whisky's I have tried, it doesn't have the after burn that takes away the taste.very pleasant and lovely with a splash of water or some ice.
My husband and I have both tried this whisky and we both enjoyed. I prefer to have without ice and neat and I found it rolled over the tongue and had a very subtle taste of coconut lingering. It was very smooth and not one bit harsh. My husband’s prefers his whiskey with a cube of ice, he agrees that the whisky rolls of the tongue which is unusual for a whisky, he says the flavour starts with a cherry flavour and fresh tasting of un-aged oak and leaves a slight coconut finish. The box looks and feels very premium, it’s a high quality card with the Japanese calligraphy been textured giving the impression that each box is hand finished. Certainly worth the price and would make an ideal special gift.
Such a beautiful whiskey. The favours are sweet, fruity and linger on your taste buds making you crave more. This is a real premium whiskey and great to enjoy with friends and for those special moments. It’s definitely worth the price, highly recommended.
