Released in Spring 2014, this is one of two Distiller's Reserve single malt whiskies from Suntory in Japan. This single malt from the Yamazaki distillery is jam-packed with superb red berry notes, gained from the whisky being matured in Bordeaux wine casks and Sherry casks. It also features malt matured in Mizunara casks, adding subtle fragrant oak notes.
Classic Yamazaki strawberries and dried fruits with floral notes coming from the Mizunara cask whisky. Fragrant sandalwood and maybe coconut. Certainly a whisky where you could get lost in its nose!
The dried berries remain lively on the palate (it even develops some raspberry notes along the way), but they're dialled back a bit to make room for light oak, white peach and a small amount of spice.
Vanilla lasts and lasts, with spicy but sweet cinnamon acting as a final flourish.
Top quality Japanese whisky, and excellent value too. Can't go wrong with this, really.

Stunning premium packaging, looks the part and tastes the part. Rich & smoothy with clean crisp textures, really gives you the feeling that you are experiencing something truly refined. Who would of though a product of Japan beating the heritage flavours of Scotland, I will be savouring every drop of this Distillers Reserve.
I tried this for first time recently and was very impressed with the smooth taste . I loved the honeyed flavours and oak notes and also hints of berries and other mellow and sweet fruity notes. I tried whiskey neat and with ice and also in a few Old fashioned cocktails and loved all three
Smooth, sweet, distinctive and not too heavy whisky, perfect to drink it neat, leaves lovely vanilla notes after. First time having Japanese whiskey and I'd have to say I am now a fan.
First time trying a Japanese whisky. My partner and I enjoyed drinking it with ice as it was a burst of alcohol for the first few seconds. We found it to be a refined drink smooth and sweet but potent as well. After having a few sips I was left with a fruity-sweet taste in my mouth which I enjoyed. It feels smooth and enjoyable when drinking. It is a whisky I would share with my friends and I would also offer it as a gift. It is a sophisticated high quality whisky which I am happy to know exists and I like the vintage format design of the bottle and box, as well as the Japanese writing on the etiquette. It is worth it as an alcoholic drink and it is different from the classic scotch and other whisky drinks. Fair price for what is offered.
A full flavoured whisky with a strong nose. The rich fruit scent is noticeable before drinking and the oak notes for me are more in the taste than smell. The cinnamon and oak flavour is strong but not harsh on the palate, adding a dash of water releases the notes of vanilla and gives a sweeter taste. This has been enjoyed neat, with a dash of water and with ginger, each one changing the flavour of the whisky but each making it just as enjoyable as the last. For me this is more of a sipping whisky, something to savour and enjoy rather than an after dinner expectation. This is not the type of whisky I'd use in a cocktail, the flavours in this mean it should be drank with minimal fuss, a dash of water or an ice cube is more than enough. The stylish, modern bottle is a great addition to our drinks shelf and its definitely something that we will rebuy.
