Woodford Reserve
Woodford Reserve's Kentucky Straight Rye whiskey has made it to our shores! Produced using a mash-bill of 53% rye, this rye shows off its spice up front and balances it well with notes of fresh fruit (think pear and cherry), chopped mint and a sweet touch of honey. Presented at 45.2% ABV.
A distinctly ordinary rye, and in my opinion way overpriced for the quality. As the reviewer below mentions, this whiskey lacks flavour and depth. The nose is its only slight saving grace, promising at least some complexity: as well as the usual earthy, spicy rye notes, there are undercurrents of cherry cola, vanilla toffee, ripe pears and heather honey. This promise upfront fails spectacularly on delivery however, with a thin, watery mouthfeel and a one dimensional, dull flavour profile. The relatively low-key rye spice on the initial palate develops into weak and slightly bitter dandelion and burdock (root beer) notes. After a reasonably satisfying spicy rye swallow, the finish dies spectacularly. A slight oaky sweetness lingers, but I’d hardly call it a finish, more of an aftertaste. Given the reputation of some of Woodford’s bourbons, in my opinion, this is a really poor effort for them.
Really disappointing, very watery start that breaks into a uninspiring burnt toffee bourbonish flavour, nice peppery finish you'd expect from a rye though. A long way off being a top rye for me.
Wonderful nose with spicy notes. In the palate it is peppery and dry with oaky nuances. It is great to know no caramel added as it is a straight rye whiskey . It has wonderful natural color directly coming from the barrel. It is a perfect example how good a rye whiskey could be.
Nice stuff. Notes of caramel and spices. Similar to Mitcher's but Pikesville is better
I can keep my nose out of the glass! What a wonderful nose, honey and caramel are quite prevalent. The first sip is a bit confusing as this rye is quite muted. Don't let this put you off, pour a large glass and let your senses acclimatize. I really enjoy this offering, a good bottle for a decent price.
