Becoming Scotland's northernmost mainland whisky producing distillery when it released its first single malt in March 2016, Wolfburn is built just 350m away from the ruins of the 19th century distillery from which it takes its name. With long fermentation, slow manual distillation and maturation taking place at least partly in quarter casks that previously held peated whisky from Islay, this is a release we've eagerly anticipated!
Orchard fruits, apple pie, a fresh maltiness, almonds, magnolia and a suggestion of smoke
Honey Nut Clusters breakfast cereal, sweet spices, chocolate croissant, more honey towards the end, and a subtle earthy peatiness.
Long and fresh, with even more rich honey notes
A deliciously complex single malt from one of Scotland’s newer distilleries - they are hitting it out of the park!
Sometime, maybe 9 years time (2025) Wolfburn will be an amazing 12y/o beacuse this 3 y/o has the making of a truly special whisky, it tastes already better than some 9 y/o's . Hopefully it will have lost the grappa aroma by then. So 2.5 stars not for whats in the glass, but for Wolfburn having the guts to get out there and make it happen.
Young yes, but lovely drink. Pale straw color belies its complexity. Others have said it well -- floral, fruity taste with peaty finish. Peat seemed strong at first but only lingers a bit. Looking forward to getting better aquatinted with Wolburn single malt (starting with more of this initial bottle...).
3 years old, but taste like a 6 years old whisky. The best way i could describe it is : a mix between a Lowland and a Highland Park. It is very pleasant and honest, a great daily-dram. Unchilfiltered, 46%, Natural color, such a great start. I would recommend it easily. So sad the price is a bit too high (35-40€ would be perfect). I can't wait to see what this distillery will bring next time.
Lovely whiskey dosent take like a 3year old would recommend
Awful - its JUST THEE YEARS OLD so barely counts as whisky - yet I paid £45. Disgusted how the marketing does not mention its callow youth. On the nose, harsh unevolved raw spirit is obvious. Taste is better - I would have guessed this to be a VERY young lowland 'cos grassy citrus notes - and supported by some oak. Finish.. well its not nice. The quarter casks used for maturing do help, but they dont make up for the lack of maturity. Shameful that this was released at all. The rest of the bottle is undrinkable - maybe use for steak + whisky sauce. Just think I could have bought a bottle of longrow CV for less money.
