“Wolfburn Northland 46% vol. Part of the distillate was matured in quarter casks from Islay. Nose: fresh, fruity (citrus), malty, apples, grass, vanilla, soft smoke in the background, pretty intense, pleasant, mild, decently built for young whisky, slightly peppery, traces of ash and salt Taste: delicate sweetness, malt, slightly smoky, peppermint, earthy note, fruits - initially white grapes, later pineapple, slightly salty, honey note, warming Finish: quite long for such a young whisky, vanilla, oak, grapes, fruity sweetness going into light dryness and bitterness A very solid 3-year-old whisky, I is hard to believe that it is so young, I really liked it, despite non-peated malt, the barrel from Islay made a great job and added some cool smoke accents. ”

Description

Becoming Scotland's northernmost mainland whisky producing distillery when it released its first single malt in March 2016, Wolfburn is built just 350m away from the ruins of the 19th century distillery from which it takes its name. With long fermentation, slow manual distillation and maturation taking place at least partly in quarter casks that previously held peated whisky from Islay, this is a release we've eagerly anticipated!

Purchased in Andorra, recommeded after a little taster session, very happy with it. Ticks all the boxes for me - long taste, light smoke and good depth of flavour. Age is not a problem.

A nice dram

This has been another pleasant surprise in my whiskey advent calendar. Not my favourite but a solid whiskey and I would never have guessed that it was so young. It tastes a little unrefined but very drinkable and leaves a lovely warmth on the finish

2016 Advent Calendar Notes

This whisky has an astringent nose with a wee bit of citrus and almost no peat to it while the palate is more bold in its smoke though still mild and reasonable for the average drinker, and the finish leaves me wanting . . . something. I can see a future in this expression though it is not quite there yet for me. I can't help but compare it to the young (3 year) Kilchoman I had when they first released it which had more character and potential. Though, like a Hot Prospect footballer--I am looking at you, Zach Clough--worth keeping an eye on for the future.

quite promising

Considering it is a 3yo it was born very well! The nose is a bit flat or perhaps "vague" at first but get more intense and defined after a few minutes. The taste is pleasant on the palate, some dried fruits a bit on the salty side with an oily texture (something like in a Scapa) it is definitely oceanic. On the minus side, it is still a bit alcoholic with a winy second taste and smell. The final is impressively long for a 3 yo but again the alcoholic note is there. Honestly a bit too expensive at the moment but certainly the best young whisky I've tried. It certainly has some promise for the future. Worth the try :-) (i love my advent calendar everyday a bit more!)
