Here we have the counterpart to William Grant's Aerstone Sea Cask, it's Land Cask! As you can probably deduce, if Sea Cask was matured in warehouses on the coast, this variant is aged in warehouses located much further inland. Another point of difference is that Land Cask is a smoky single malt thanks to the use of Highland peat, making for a sweet and smoky dram.
Earthy peat smoke and vanilla pod, with a briney note, black pepper, smoked meats and burnt rubber, with just a touch of fresh fruity sweetness.
Balanced sweet and smoky notes, with aniseed, burnt brown sugar, charred oak and salted honeycomb. Then there's olive brine, barbecued citrus fruit and smoked meats.
Sweet and smoky battle it out on the finish, with vanilla fudge and peat smoke alongside dry, spicy oak.
Nice. Not overwhelming in the smoke department - I have gone away from Laphroig and Ardbeg a little, but this seems a mellow medium between a nice Speyside and the Islay malts. $69 in Gosford so pretty reasonable.. One my son can come and put a considerable dent in without upsetting his Dad! Particularly if I help!
If you just want a cheaper easy drinking smooth whiskey (with a bit of peat*) its does that job well, but it lacks the body and comfort factor you get with a good whiskey. *This is a peaty whiskey so if you don't like that flavour it is not for you. If you like your whiskey peaty, for me this one is missing a bit of punch and the peaty taste doesn't linger. I miss the complexity of a finish you get with the pricer whiskeys.
I agree with other people who are not whiskey drinkers with a palate I found this to be to totally unpleasant to drink like a medical smell not nice to smell or pleasant to drink for some reason distillers think that if they make a whiskey really smokey it will make it smell and taste better it doesn’t it makes it in drinkable I got this bought for my birthday and I now feel embarrassed that I have to tell my friends it’s awful and undrinkable sorry not for me and anybody who thinks this is nice to drink wants there heads examined
If like me you like your whisky heavy on the smoke, like lagavulin 16 or big pete then you'll love this at £20 a bottle. Nothing comes close at this price, just enough smoke and phenol to satisfy my taste and the smoothness of a 10yr old with no "off" flavour of tails from the still like say the nas bunnahabhain. 10/10 a bargain.
A really nice whisky, I usually go for Speyside single malts but was given a bottle of Aerstone Land Cask as an inexpensive surprise gift from my wife. Smoky with an interesting nose and wonderful finish, it is as lovely as she is.
