Here we have the counterpart to William Grant's Aerstone Sea Cask, it's Land Cask! As you can probably deduce, if Sea Cask was matured in warehouses on the coast, this variant is aged in warehouses located much further inland. Another point of difference is that Land Cask is a smoky single malt thanks to the use of Highland peat, making for a sweet and smoky dram.
Earthy peat smoke and vanilla pod, with a briney note, black pepper, smoked meats and burnt rubber, with just a touch of fresh fruity sweetness.
Balanced sweet and smoky notes, with aniseed, burnt brown sugar, charred oak and salted honeycomb. Then there's olive brine, barbecued citrus fruit and smoked meats.
Sweet and smoky battle it out on the finish, with vanilla fudge and peat smoke alongside dry, spicy oak.
I normally do not review whisky; leave it to those with finer palates, but I have to review this and warn people. When I read other reviews saying it tasted like burned rubber I doubted that and could not even imagine it tasting like burnt rubber. Oh how wrong I was. I don't know if this was intentional but the smoky taste is not good, its so artificial I am surprised it is allowed or even safe to be produced - and this coming from someone who usually eats/drinks anything, really. Still left with 3/4 of the bottle and I don't know if I'll be able to go through it because of this overwhelming taste of burnt tires. Like someone else suggested, will most likely blend it with another whisky.
Again you just have to try it -I like it peaty it probably is more medicinal then other peaty whiskies I have chosen like glen moray and laphroaig but it’s smooth and enjoyable gets the thumbs up from where I’m standing
Enough like Laphroaig that I like it as $29/bottle!
I loved it! Great price and very satisfying. Each to his / her own , of course, but can't be doing with all the OTT gobbledegook that comes with some so- called "whiskey buffs". Will try the Sea Cask next then stock up for Christmas! Cheers!
If you love em smoky, peaty with a carbolic aroma, like I do, you will love this. While my go to whiskies are Laphroaig 10 or Ardberg, this comes very close! Amazingly this was on special offer at only £20! What a steal!
