Here we have the counterpart to William Grant's Aerstone Sea Cask, it's Land Cask! As you can probably deduce, if Sea Cask was matured in warehouses on the coast, this variant is aged in warehouses located much further inland. Another point of difference is that Land Cask is a smoky single malt thanks to the use of Highland peat, making for a sweet and smoky dram.
Earthy peat smoke and vanilla pod, with a briney note, black pepper, smoked meats and burnt rubber, with just a touch of fresh fruity sweetness.
Balanced sweet and smoky notes, with aniseed, burnt brown sugar, charred oak and salted honeycomb. Then there's olive brine, barbecued citrus fruit and smoked meats.
Sweet and smoky battle it out on the finish, with vanilla fudge and peat smoke alongside dry, spicy oak.
My son bought me a bottle for my birthday, never had this one before. When you see burnt rubber, aniseed and olive brine in the tasting notes it doesn't make me enthusiastic to try it but what a pleasant surprise. I loved it one of the best for me.
Both the nose and the palate remind me of a saying I once heard in a movie: "It's like a sumo wrestler took a dump on a burning tire!" 'Nuff said.
On a cold winter's night you might find yourself reaching for a peaty Islay malt like Laphroaig or Lagavulin. There's no pretending that this malt comes close to those in terms of depth of balance of flavour. But for the price I have not encountered a smoother and more satisfying smoky malt.
I love Islay whiskey. This one was pretty surprising for me, that I found typical taste and aroma like on Lagavulin, Ardbeg or Laphroaig. But for 1/3 of its price. Well done. Next thing I must try Sea Cask :).
I am not sure why the first review here is so dismissive about this whisky. Maybe he or she does not like peated whisky or expected the quality of Macallan or Lagavullin for the price. I personally can only recommend this one for all that people who are looking for a medium peated whisky which does not ruin their bank account
