Here we have the counterpart to William Grant's Aerstone Sea Cask, it's Land Cask! As you can probably deduce, if Sea Cask was matured in warehouses on the coast, this variant is aged in warehouses located much further inland. Another point of difference is that Land Cask is a smoky single malt thanks to the use of Highland peat, making for a sweet and smoky dram.
Earthy peat smoke and vanilla pod, with a briney note, black pepper, smoked meats and burnt rubber, with just a touch of fresh fruity sweetness.
Balanced sweet and smoky notes, with aniseed, burnt brown sugar, charred oak and salted honeycomb. Then there's olive brine, barbecued citrus fruit and smoked meats.
Sweet and smoky battle it out on the finish, with vanilla fudge and peat smoke alongside dry, spicy oak.
Better do not smell it. Suprisingly - it drinkable. I need time, to understand what happened ...
Fabulously smoky malt, and for money its great value. I don't understand some of the snobbish comments on i think peoples palates differ and the negative comments I would surmise they'd been eating reindeer droppings tasting
A good one.
Strikes as an island malt 'Second Label' - sort of a second tier Talisker. Similar characters. Smokey, slightly tarry, briney characters. Not terrible, just not great. Mid week drinking as a filler - keep the better stuff for the weekend when you can enjoy & not worry about work tomorrow
I liked it, it has a number of positive points which I am happy to share. Look at the price.... brilliant Smoke & Peat.. that can be a Danger Will Robinson, especially if you are not willing to enter the childhood TCP medicine taste...but...none of that. It has subtle hints, not overpowering and I dare say Goldilocks would approve. Colour, nose, taste and after burn all good. Not amazing but good. You should be aware though, this is not a £120 bottle of liquid gold so manage your disappointment. Here's the deal, I will buy this again. This is the best endorsement I can give.
