Aerstone 10 Year Old Land Cask

Here we have the counterpart to William Grant's Aerstone Sea Cask, it's Land Cask! As you can probably deduce, if Sea Cask was matured in warehouses on the coast, this variant is aged in warehouses located much further inland. Another point of difference is that Land Cask is a smoky single malt thanks to the use of Highland peat, making for a sweet and smoky dram.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Earthy peat smoke and vanilla pod, with a briney note, black pepper, smoked meats and burnt rubber, with just a touch of fresh fruity sweetness.

    Palate

Balanced sweet and smoky notes, with aniseed, burnt brown sugar, charred oak and salted honeycomb. Then there's olive brine, barbecued citrus fruit and smoked meats.

    Finish

Sweet and smoky battle it out on the finish, with vanilla fudge and peat smoke alongside dry, spicy oak.

Islay on a budget - the Marmite Whisky

Let's start by saying this is a peated whisky, it has smokey flavours, someone stated 'tar' which they complained about. Some compare it to TSP medicene or the worst menthol cough sweets. It's suppose to taste like that though. Fans of peat whisky love these flavours. This is the marmite element, you either like these interesting flavours or you don't. If you like smoked Islay whiskies and Talisker this is an incredible budget option. In Morrisons it even goes on sale for £20 when on offer, which is incredible value. It's much smoother than many none age statement Islay offerings. Even in the higher prices online I'd recommend giving it a go. As a rule of thumb I'd say it's a fair bit better than Laphroaig Select but not as good as Laphroaig 10.

Overwhelming taste of tar. Not an enjoyable single malt, even for a budget end single malt

In the last 5 years I only purchased single malt whisky and enjoyed the different taste sensations. I am not brand conscious, so my purchases are very varied. This month it was the Land Cask. This was the first time that I did not enjoy a whisky. It had a smell and taste of fresh tar, and it lingered long after I finished it. I experimented with water, from a few drops to 5 ml, but taste just would not change. I had 3/4 bottle on the Majors Reserve and resorted to blending the two, so as not to waste the whisky. I eventually settled on 65% MR and 35% LC. The taste sensation was much better, with only a slight but enjoyable lingering of the Land Cask. I have other half drunk single malts and will do some more experimentation. I am adventurous, so I will give the Sea Cask a go.

Like Laphroaig, but less intense. A great drinking whiskey.

Like Laphroaig, but less intense. Dare I say it, it's almost like it has a bit of bourbon mixed in. A great drinking whiskey. Had an Ardbeg Wee Beasty next to it. This was less sharp, and with a rounder taste on the smokey notes.

    get the sea cask.

I Love malt whiskey, but this land cask smokey edition, I find it to be too false in flavor, very smokey, almost like sucking a kipper, is this the real flavor developed for this malt whiskey, or has it been added. I feel it has been added for the flavor, please do something to make it more natural. Mind you the sea cask edition, is very acceptable. Also well worth what I paid for.

    An odd experience.

A single malt priced at the lower end of the market and for good reason. This one is fairly watery and sweet with a bitter acidic aftertaste. The smokiness is mild and doesn't lend to the body at all. An unpleasant experience.
