I freely confess to knowing nothing about whisky due to some youthful bad experiences drinking cheap blended whisky's but as I get a little bit older my palate is developing a taste for exploring Speyside, lowland and even Rye. I hadn't expected to be given a bottle of White and Mackay for a Christmas gift and thought it would collect some dust but having tried a small glass I was really surprised to find it was not as bad as I expected, in fact it was much better. So here goes, it has a soft mellow caramel flavour then a hint of sherry comes through, gradually progressing to a spirit sensation and then a smokey linger. It doesn't feel harsh, even for a novice like myself and thankfully very little peat tones. In fact this is a probably a good starting point and you wouldn't feel guilty about using a mixer as it is a blend after all.
It's a good blend if you can get it for £12-£14 you can definitely taste the dalmore malt in this. Tastes like Christmas Pudding.
Half the price of chap bourbon (£12 a bottle here) this had me wondering what new depths of depravity I was aspiring to on Friday night. However. Was a surprised? Nose is as good as any bourbon I've had: lots of sugared fruit, vanilla, sherry notes etc. On ice it has a distinctly un-malt taste; again like bourbon. 40% so plenty of kick and the finish is smooth as silk. Genuinely impressed at the quality for the price. Single malt it is not but its completely drinkable neat on the rocks.
This is a good blend. I'd never drink an expensive single malt with ice but whyte&Mackay on ice tastes amazing!
Of the cheaper blended whiskies this one stands apart. A bargain price that is full of flavour unlike Bells, Teachers, Grants or Grouse. When the budget is tight this is my go to whisky, drunk neat a truly enjoyable dram.
