This is a 5 year old single malt from little-known White Oak, based in Hyogo (just west of Kobe). It was aged in a Sherry cask for those 5 years, resulting in generous helpings of lip-smacking Sherried sweetness.
Soft red fruits (think raisins, cherries and a few cheeky raspberries), followed by a hint of smokey spice.
Treacle, plums, aromatic black tea, earthy oak and blackcurrant.
Baking spices, chocolate and a hint of marmalade.
Very smooth with notes of caramel, fruits, and vanilla. And Akashi focuses more on Sake than Whisky. Akashi does release 10+ yr whiskies but they are rare and only available on Dekanta. Imagine how those 10+ yr of Akashi taste
This is a solid dram. It is a little heavy on the Sherry finish for my taste, but still very good. It is a touch spendy, especially for a 50cl bottle, but anyone buying this bottle isn’t buying it because it’s cheaper than the next bottle. They’re buying it because it’s unique, not readily available, high quality, and very tasty. From that perspective, it was a good purchase.
You may be aware Jim Murray awarded the Best Whisky in the World to a Japanese Whisky (Yamazaki Sherry cask, 2013), but you and other customers don't need to follow the hype. However, rating a whisky because you are angry or frustrated doesn't help anyone -- it may be horrible, it may be good, it may be overpriced. This website is rife with angry faux-reviews like this. Sit down and have a nice dram, enjoy the holidays, and post when you are ready to help other customers.
134 quid? What a joke for a 5 yo..I don't even care if its even good. You could get 2 bottles of very good Scotch to go. what's with all these fascination with Japanese whisky anyway?
