A basic blended Irish whiskey from West Cork Distillers matured in ex-bourbon casks.
Vanilla, hay, biscuit crumbs, touch of glue and yellow fruit.
Poached pear, buffalo grass, a little light caramel.
Short with some orchard fruit and pepper.
Nose is pleasant, dark fruits and vanilla, buttery, cream, dominated by sweet pleasant grain, reminds me of Teeling Single Grain. A bit of a glue, is there any unmalted barley there? Taste is relatively strong for a blend, it reminds me of other West Cork expression so it has to carry a distillate character of the house. Burn is one of the lightest I get from blends, tho it tastes more like 43% than 40%. Aftertaste is short and peppery at first, but then you discover it is still lingering after long time. West Cork seems to have this characteristic sulphury aftertaste of something like, excuse my comparison, motor oil (?) which I really, really love. Morish is a good word? You don't want to stop sipping it, that's for sure. Overall it reminds me some of non-peated Islands/Highland whiskeys which I called have "Atlantic" character. It is very un-Jameson-y, so be aware, this one is different. And I am not lying, every time I take a sip I imagine a fjord or something like that. I really hope these guys will stay independent distillers forever... One of these bottles you can travel with to the most remote parts of the world. I bought it for 25e on special offer in Ireland, and I think that would be a fair price point to sell it at.
A great value Irish Whiskey! Give me this over the basic Paddy, Jameson, et al. any day of the week. It has a hint of the green-apple of West Cork's "The Pogues", but with a little bourbon warmth and caramel. Not a huge taste or complexity - but look at the price! Fantastic for mixing, and good enough to sip.
