The Glengarriff Series was launched in early 2018 by West Cork Distillers with two expressions - the Peat Charred Cask Finish (which you're look at right now!) and the Bog Oak Charred Cask Finish. These single malt Irish whiskeys are initially matured in Sherry casks before being treated to a finishing period in casks that have been charred using fuel sources from the Glengarriff Forest in West Cork. The distillers even have their own bespoke device, built with the help of a local blacksmith, to do the charring.
The peat charred casks that this expression was finished in has imparted an earthy smokiness rarely seen in Irish whiskey - fascinating stuff!
Orange oil, dry earth and fried banana. A hint of warming cinnamon grows in the background.
Meaty malt, quince and a good helping of ripe pear.
Peppery oak and dried apricot. Distant smoke.
No, this is not a peated whiskey. It taste something like bourbon with old sunflower oil. Totaly bad taste!
The Peat Charred is in my top three whiskeys. Beautiful mild peat flavor, not overpowering, an easy daily pour if it were readily available. The other top pours are The Pouge and Teeling Single Cask Port Finished.
My wife and I purchased a bottle of Peat Charred in a small Siesta Key, FL retail liquor store and carried it back to NC. What a treat it’s been. The flavor is outstanding and unique. We enjoy drinking it straight up or over ice with a touch of sweet vermouth and bitters. Yumm.
Absolutely lovely with definite orange notes
Unique and a wonderful surprise from my 5th generation Irish love! Canadian that is.
