Ireland's Waterford Distillery is once again showing us that there is definitely more than one way to make whisky with its Luna 1.1 expression, said to be the world's first biodynamic whisky! Biodynamic farm has praised by many winemakers, but Waterford is introducing that to the world of whisky with biodynamic barley grown by Irish growers (Trevor Harris, Alan Mooney, and John McDonnell). Fascinating stuff, and rather fantastically full-flavoured, too.
Super spicy, almost like a rye whisky. There’s cinnamon, cardamom and freshly-baked rye bread, with apples, peaches and apricots.
It’s alive with spice: black pepper, cinnamon and ginger. Then creamy, almost cream cheese notes, pastry, vanilla and sugared almonds with orchard fruits.
Those amazing aromatics linger mingled with creamy custard. Very long.
Fantastically overpriced for a young, non aged statement, whiskey. Not terrible but much better whiskeys at this price point.
Terrific, complex and to be frank quite astonishing for such a young whisky. Clearly a unique style, which probably puts off some of the old guard, but if you ask me it's got a great intensity. Worth the hype.
