    Tullibardine 225 Sauternes Cask Finish

Distilled at Tullibardine in the Highlands, this is a very tasty new whisky which was finished in a 225 litre cask (thus the name) which previously held maturing Sauternes dessert wine from Chateau Suduiraut. The result is a golden-coloured single malt with a deliciously creamy, fruity flavour.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Citrus peels and allspice. Notes of creamy vanilla, golden syrup, cocoa butter and black pepper.

    Palate

Spiced palate entry with notes of candied orange and Seville marmalade. A little dried pineapple and white chocolate.

    Finish

Medium finish with lingering sweet spices.

    Overall

Superbly fruity whisky with a lovely influence from a dessert wine cask.

Good one, better than Sovereign like for me.

    Perfect

I've sampled a few malts in my time and this is one of the best, the Tullibardine 225 Sauternes Finish. Just had another dram. Pure amber nectar. What more can I say.

    Harsh, overpowering sourness - avoid

Bought this on a whim and am pretty disappointed. The bottle I have is extremely harsh and lacking in smoothness, with an underlying almost fungal kind of sourness like accidentally biting into an aspirin or an antibiotic, and none of the sweetness that the blurb on here promises. It's very much on the young, Jura end of the whisky spectrum, so perhaps it would go down better if that's your thing. Perhaps the bottlings are inconsistent or something. I'll stick to Highland Park 12, Bunnahabhain and other favourites in future.

    SUPERB

This Tullibardine 225 sauternes is one of the best malt whisky i have tasted, every bit as good as Balvennie double wood. I visited Blackwood serveral times on my way to Aberdeen and tasted a few drams there but this is one of the best. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK John Hodge Maybole

    An acquired taste?

I wonder how much this varies from batch to batch since Sauternes certainly varies hugely from one vintage to another. The conditions for the growth of the Botrytis aren't propitious every year after all. That said, in the bottle I bought and tasted, I find the flavour of the fungus a little overpowering. It renders the nose somewhat sour, masking the marvellous range of fruit scents. Overall, the whisky is well-balanced with a pleasant sweetness to offset the sourness of the "mouldy cork" flavour. I certainly prefer Glenmorangie's Nectar d'Or which manages to retain the raisin sweetness without the mould.
