Released in late 2007, a peaty single malt from the Tomintoul distillery.
Full and pungent. There are notes of heather roots and wood smoke. A dark peat with notes of copper and pine oils with a touch of gentle sweetness from the barley malt.
Quite rich and powerful. There are notes of toasted oak with notes of pepper and the smoke thereof. Notes of toasty cereals and supple peat. A wistful ash note builds.
Long and hot with pepper and a leafy green note.

For perspective, I am usually a smoke head type of whiskey drinker so at first taste I thought this was going to be too 1 dimensional and I am sure there are people who will find this either too much (smoke) or not enough (other, punchy flavours). However once I accepted the duality, I found I couldn’t get enough! The nose is smoke and earth but for me also also marzipan and Turkish delight. I love it. It’s a whiskey you can really hold in your mouth, exactly as described in the tasting notes but also for me a little nutty and a hint of iodine. A dash of water brings out the sweet flavours. For perspective, I don’t like creamy but this was just enough caramel and custard, without getting anywhere near sickly. Right at the end, a suggestion of unripe conference pear and mineral water leading back to the peat and smoke. Five stars for the price range. A thoroughly enjoyable and far too easy to drink whiskey.
Many thanks folks, it arrived today. I was astounded to discover the name of the Head Distiller at Tomintoul as I bought this for a friend's birthday.......He's called Robert Fleming as well! Sheer coincidence!
I had high hopes for this but was unfortunately dissapointed. I like peated whisky but for me there wasn't a lot going on here. Sure the peat was there and for some reason I had a bitter lemon. Apart from that I didn't find a lot. Having said all this, it's drinkable and not badly priced.
This seems to take the already beautiful signature tomintoul taste and smoothness, adds a peaty smoke hit without losing the existing taste or character. Easily one of the best peated whiskies pound for pound
I don't know the standard Tomintoul flavour but I found this a little dry and unsubtle for my taste. Interesting but not my favourite by a long way.
